crowe Okay, sinse I left of last time with Line Noise, Lets start with the cat. How's Line Noise?
Pinguino I just moved to hollywood, and my ex-boyfriend is UPSing him over here He learned how to create files in linux though!
crowe Ha. Hacker Cat.
Pinguino Hell yes
crowe Speaking of the move, this is like what? 4 States this year? Whats up with that?
Pinguino hahah.. California is my home. It took me 2 years to learn this. You will see Penguin Palace thrive, simply from the love and support of the people around me who have been there from the beginning
crowe I think thats a good Segway, Penguin Palace has been doing alot of Cons and the CD-ROM is out since we last talked. Tell me a little about that. How did everyone treat you and did you meet any cool comic names?
Pinguino Our last con was APE, and Logic Box and I will be attending WonderCon (speaking of which, Logic Box has been given the position of Convention Coordinator). We got a reallly good response. A lot of people picked up the CD, and others were complimenting us on our creativity. I met some cool publishers, visited my old friends. It was a nice reunion.
crowe So you had fun eh? Did you learn anyting by hitting the cons? Make any good contacts?
Pinguino We're workig on our next digital comic, which will also be on enhanced CD. The title tenatively is "Tori Do: Prophecy" Conventions boost the morale of Penguin Palace, as well as let us gain exposure in the comic book industry. I love meeting publishers, mainly because we tend to think alike and can bounce ideas off each other. We all bitch about the same things and eat a lot of ramen.
crowe We talked last time about how you started Penguin Palace. Now that your CD-ROM is out, do you have any advice for people trying to do similiar things? Things to do, things NOT to do?
Pinguino The comic book industry is getting torn up by Diamond. I wouldn't recommend putting a comic book out.. go into digital comics like us.. or art books, graphic novels, or other creative ventures.
Pinguino If you do a digital comic.. we started out doing HTML and realaudio.. but really, flash is the way to go. You maintain quality while sustaining a small filesize, and people tend to react well to animations. Just don't make Marvel's mistake and have animations take the place of everything else. The other good point about flash is that it is multiplatform; there is a plugin for linux users, as well as windows and macs. Although most publishers wouldn't care about it, a great majority of our readers run Xwindows rather than MacOS or Windows98/NT.
crowe Sounds pretty reasonable. How about any tips for Writers? What tips would you give about creating good characters and strong stories?
Pinguino I used to write by just letting a story flow. Now.. freshman english class skillz are hitting me and I find myself slowly outlining the book in my head, as i write it out movie-script style. Another reason I chose that format is that at APE a year ago, Mike Alldred said that comics were the poor man's film.. and upon closer examination I totally agree. There is no reason a comic book script shouldn't be treated with the same scrutiny as a movie script
crowe I've seen that said on more than one occasion. Many comic writers aspire to do movies. People Like Peter David and Frank Miller went on to do some great ones, and Kevin Smith went backwards because of his love of comics. You have any aspirations to do movies?
Pinguino Of course =) But.. digital comics have the potential to hold sooo many movie elements that I'm completely happy with it at the moment. I want to create short movie videos for each song on the CD and release those separate though. I also have a few B-movie ideas I may explore.. I live in Hollywood. I'm sure the resources are at hand.
crowe I know your a fan of Martial Arts.. have you seen The Matrix?
Pinguino OH. That is now my all-time favorite movie. Not only do the story and karate and effects totally impress me, the concept is soo possible. Most movies out there really don't spin your brain. I wouldn't be suprised if a cult sprang up utelizing the beliefs of the movie. Not to mention the fact it says "System Failure" on the screen, focused, for 30 seconds When I saw it the second time I like, yelled "System Failure" really loud in the theater. Of course, only 4 people in the theater understood what I was doing.
crowe Hah, Indeed. Its about time a movie's PLOT drove the ACTION. This movie has inspired me. And I'm going for my 3rd time tommorrow! Whats some of the stuff thats inspired you in recent months?
Pinguino Well.. I've been focusing on this move. I found out this past weekend that I love sailing.. the feeling of being in control of a 4 ton sailboat that lurches over waves like a trackless rollercoaster really inspires me Also, just things with my personal life have driven me to create a web-comic for pinguino.org .. it's called "a new life" It's actually a story that deals with change and dreams, and balancing love with friendship, and honesty with instinct.
crowe Well, I think your qualified ;)
Pinguino hahah yeah.. I've been through a lot.. would you believe that I'm not even yet 21?
crowe I find it hard to beleive sometimes :) I know your quite the little web mistress.. any plans for cool web stuff besides the new comic?
Pinguino I've only been gone from San Diego for 2 years.. it feels more like a faded dream. I can't compare Dallas to Southern California. I act sooo different in those two lives I had.. Yeah.. I registered digitalcomicbook.com and will put up a portal to other digital comics and webcomics there. I have a few random sites in mind.. and I really wanna play with video and audio editing. Penguin Palace will be putting out a lot of teasing eyecandy to keep the fans happy until Prophecy is done. Barkode's schooling me on multimedia =) Director is what I've been training on lately
crowe Multimedia is definatly the future of story telling. The web and computer technology really open doors to indy publishers. I've got a coupld tricks in my back for this year as well! What are some of your favorite digital tools..
Pinguino My hands are still my favorite tools.. I've just leaped into animating my artwork. So far, Adobe After Effects is my favorite, with Bryce being ideal for dewdling ice. Flash is really the future.. I finally figured out a way to present comics to the community while maintaining the comic book architecture. You realllly need to get the new Tori Do when it's ready. It's such an exciting project. I can't reveal too much on the effects, because I know that work out faster than I would definately be interested in copycatting it It really isn't the tools.. it's still the mind behind the tools that keeps people interested That's why people who can actually draw will always have more respect than KPT and filter whores
crowe Anything for your closing? Hints to the future or a little self plugging?
Pinguino Expect a lot of experimental work from us, and from our friends at Sypher Publications. Comics don't need to release in 18 page b/w books.. we plan on pushing the limits of the medium. thanks crowe ill get you a nice pic of me too ttyl!@#
crowe Groovy!, and thank YOU again!
