While I write this ,the sounds blare in the background-loud,strident and cuttingly intrusive. On the usual hackneyed topics currently convulsing the Western media : the BBC on "Anti-Americanism" , CNN on 'the UK threat perceptions and their being inextricably linked to the Knighthood for Salman Rushdie'.

The Indian media ,in the meantime, goes its own blithe and merry way : Cricket-and still more Cricket, Computers, and of course the now-de rigeur Bollywood greatness. ( The latter solely because its now the 'flavour of the month' in the West.)

To cut to the chase- the UK has been simply asking for it. It does not take a great leap of intellect ,or the best boffins from MI 5, to tell the powers-that-be that awarding the knighthood to Rushdie would be a resounding slap in the face to Islam. Yet HMG persists with its intransigence -waving the red rag and practically begging for trouble. Clearly the deadliest Parthian Shot ever - delivered with a panache unparalleled ,by a (vengeful) Tony Blair.

Why would a country riding the crest, with the world at its feet-with such a formidable reputation for excellence, clear-thinking ,ruthlessness and unnerving perfidy - shoot itself so deliberately in the foot.Surely the man at the centre of this maelstrom could not be worth it.(As an author he could not even begin to hold a candle to the greatest among 'em.)

The true reasons may never be known, Though it might well be tempting to give free rein to fancy - and trot out the weirdest of reasons. Ranging from his uncanny ability to locate and titillate the literary G-Spot of the West - all the way to the Will of God and the Prophecies in the Book of Revelations coming to pass ,thanks to such a foolhardy act.

Whatever the reasons ,its becoming ever clearer by the minute that Rushdie is now up there with the emerging pantheon of a liberal ( and increasingly Godless) West . The (Un )Holy Trinity comprising : J.K.Rowling , Paris Hilton - and now the newly minted 'Sir' Salman Rushdie.

Does this now put paid to very notion of the Holy Trinity . Or would the three of them somehow work it out amongst themselves ,as to who would be Father , Son and Holy Ghost. And may the Devil then take the hindmost.

long dark knighthood of the soul
raises a good point, to which there's little left to add. although I'm as puzzled as to why Rushdie accepted the knighthood as to why it was offered in the first place. thought he might have had the good sense- if not the good grace- to refuse outright. others have. reminded of far more gallant Benjamin Zephaniah who spurned the OBE as a symbol of the British Empire and all it representedů how much is a commendation from the Western world really worth anyway?
