This story was inspired by my friend's eleven-year-old daughter, who challenged me to see who could write and finish a story faster. She chose to write about ancient Greece. I chose something more universal.

--------------------------------------------------

Once upon a time there was a little soul, and even though it was little, it was very special. Inside this soul it carried a great secret, something so magnificent that should anyone discover what it is, they would instantly become happy for all of eternity. Since it was a secret, however, not everyone was able to uncover what it was, or even how to do it. Regardless, the little soul kept its secret until the day that everyone would be able to find it, even though it very much wanted to share it with everyone right away.

One day while floating along in the universe, the little soul came across a planet full of people. All kinds of people. Some were loud or quiet, some tall or short, and even some were black or white. Although happy to find a planet full of people, the little soul noticed that they were arguing all the time over their differences, and have been for years and years. In fact, the people couldn’t even remember exactly when they started arguing. The little soul watched for a while before it could think of the right questions to ask to find out why there were bickering.

Finally, the little soul just asked, “Why do you argue?” Everyone the little soul asked gave a different answer, nobody agreeing on even why they argued! How silly, the little soul thought, how they did not even know what they were fighting about. After some time the little soul came across one of the quietest people and noticed she was really sad. “Why are you sad?” it asked. “Because everyone is angry and I just want to be happy,” she replied. The little soul lit up and started dancing around, excited to find someone that could help uncover its secret!

“I want to tell you a secret that will make you happy for all eternity,” the little soul told the girl. The girl’s eyes lit up and said, “Yes! Please tell me!” The little soul explained that since it was a secret for it to share with everyone, that everyone would have to want to know it in order for it to be told. “How can that possibly happen?” she asked. The little soul further explained that everyone would need to stop arguing, and instead search for the feeling of being excited to know they will soon be happy for all of eternity. “Maybe you could help everyone search for this feeling,” it told the girl. “How can I possibly help everyone?” she asked. “Well,” the little soul said, “You could start by helping just one person to search for the feeling.”

So the girl decided to help her friend, who was arguing with his parents. She told him that if they were to help everyone search for this feeling of excitement instead of trying to argue, that the little soul will tell them the secret to eternal happiness. The boy got excited and decided to help. They each helped one more person, and eventually more and more people began to help more and more people search for the feeling of excitement to know they would discover the secret to eternal happiness.

Then the day finally came where everyone was helping everyone else feel the excitement, and so the girl said to the little soul, “Everyone is helping everyone feel excited! Now can you tell us the secret?” The little soul danced about with glee, but said it had one question for her first. “How does it make you feel after helping so many people become excited?” The girl smiled and said, “It makes me feel very happy! Everyone has finally stopped arguing and are now so very excited to know that they can be eternally happy soon!” The little soul danced even more, shining its light everywhere. “You are now ready for the secret!” it exclaimed. The girl stood up straight and tall, a huge smile on her face as she waited to hear the secret she was longing to know. The little soul then glowed so bright that the only thing the girl could see was a soothing white light everywhere.

The next morning when the girl woke up she looked around for the little soul. It wasn’t anywhere in sight. After the white light that filled her vision the day before, she wasn’t able to hear what the little soul had said afterwards. Afraid that she might have missed the secret forever, she ran outside. To her surprise everyone was fighting again. Instantly she grew sad knowing she was so close to discovering the secret. Even if she were to find the little soul again, it wouldn’t be able to tell her the secret if everyone was arguing. Then, just as the girl started to cry, the little soul floated up next to her and asked, “Why are you sad?” “Oh, little soul! I didn’t get to hear your secret, and now everyone is arguing again! It took most of the years of my life to get everyone to feel excited, how will I ever be able to accomplish it again?”

The little soul said to her, “You were already once able to get everyone searching for the feeling of excitement instead of trying to argue, and you did it so wonderfully! How did it make you feel after helping just one person?” “Oh little soul,” she said, “it made me so very happy!” Just then the girl felt a surge of happiness rush into her! She remembered how wonderful it felt to start the journey by helping her one friend become excited. Finally she realized that the very happiness she longed so much for she could find just by helping one other person feel excited again. The little soul danced around wildly, knowing she finally knew how to uncover the secret.
