At the beginning, it was so hard to understand
Why you were taken away from me too soon.
With all my troubles, I needed you both so much.
I will never forget those wise and loving words,
“I’m always with you, from your pocket to your palm.”
Whenever I feel alone or so sad that I could cry,
I reach into my pocket, hold my palm to my heart.
There you both are, just as I remember you.
Grandpa holding my hand through the fields,
Sitting on the bank teaching me to fish right,
Or preparing me for lessons of the world outside.
Nannie, with her torn shawl in the rocker crocheting,
Teaching me a pinch of this or a pinch of that,
Or acting out characters of my favorite stories.
I remember your words of encouragement,
The smiles, the hugs, the tear-drying games,
The guidance in faith, but most of all, your love.
I will forever need you both to watch over me,
To guide me with right and wrong, so you’ll be proud.
My hand is over my heart again, holding on tight.
You’re always with me, just as you both promised.

PAUL & MARY SKROBACK, my parents and grandparents,
for their never-ending love, understanding, guidance and faith)
