Time is a fool;
why else does he dance
only to amuse?
The burlesque, Ive been told,
is here only to entertain:
what, then, is life?
Burlesque.
Have you heard?
My life has ended, like the sentence
which the editor deemed too long,
too obtrusive and obfuscated,
and you are the period.
If I were you
(which I am most definitely,
but not unfortunately, not)
I would take this as a compliment;
I love you, but not enough
to engage you in conversation.
In fact, I wish we had never talked,
as my preconception had been tainted
by the pollution of your thought.
Tell me, maam:
do you like what you see?
It was prepared wholly for you
and not for me.
Tell me, maam:
what would you say to my face
if I were unable to respond?
Pretend, for this moment (and,
As luck would have it,
Only this moment)
that Massachusetts is
not a past but only a mass of land.
