(dedicated to the great Herman Hesse)

If the war goes on,
what but gore shall be achieved?
what wealth shall be accrued but
living upon mourned son?

If the war goes on,
what shall be the harvest
in the fields ploughed with trenches,
unplanted but with bullets,
and fertilized with human blood?

If the war goes on,
how shall the children ever get to bed
with their ears tormented with dinner-table dogma
and howling rockets overhead?

If the war goes on,
what shall be the spoils
but vendetta piled upon vendetta
vengeance upon vengeance…

covering up the meadows and flowers
till there’s no sunshine
that can pierce the fogs of hate…
and “Jihad!, Jihad!”
is the only song to soothe the babes?

"Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complicated, and more violent. It takes a lot of courage... and a touch of brilliance to move things in the other direction."

- Albert Einstein

I appreciate your positive feedback. I'm particularly proud of this piece because, aside from being well-crafted, it's purely productive in message. As I was saying to a scholarly friend, "I've hardly lived as a saint." Actually, even aside from my vices, I'm an angry person.

But, here, I don't refer to any specific war(though I'm proud to have been at the barricades as the first bombs fell on Iraq.) Rather, I'm speaking of the general evil of ethno-centric struggle as opposed to cooperation and compassion. As you may know, the German author Herman Hesse, taking exception to the nearly Nazi party... published a book of essays titled "If the War Goes On."

Ma Salaawm, (arabic for "go in peace")
