I'm Rosie, editor of the blog Mememetherapya science fiction blog where we interview sci-fi and fantasy authors and scientists (recent people we've annoyed include Joe Haldeman, John Scalzi, Alastair Reynolds] and I thought some of you here at litdotorg might be interested in a very silly contest we're running.

The goal of the contest is to write the opening paragraph of a novel using the cheesiest, purplest prose you can manage. (Keep it short) We’re going to judge the entries, pick the five most horrifying examples in each category and publish them on Mememetherapy.

The categories are Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror.

Unfortunately we don’t have any prizes to offer except for prominent links to whatever pages you want and the honour (or disgrace) of winning the coveted Purple Planet award.

We’re closing the judging on Sept 15th so if you want to participate just whip up that paragraph and email it to us at

We will be running some serious contests soon as well, this is just a warm up to see what sort of response we get.

Here's hoping you are all feeling suitably cheesey.
