Interview with Mark Pacella , Creator of Tooth and Claw for Image comics!

Visit the Tooth and Claw homepage!

Hey Chris!!

What a bunch of questions!! I'am going to strangle you!! HA HA!! Just Kidding, There really quite excellent!

Q. First off, tell is a little about yourself. Where did you come from? What kind of art training did you recieve? Just who are you?

Born and raised in New Jersey I moved to New York City in my mid twenties where I lived and worked as an artist for advertising, illustration and comic books. My parents weren't very wealthy so I had to constantly work and save to send myself to different art schools after highschool. I never graduated any of them as I always ran out of money before I could get a degree. And no, I did not want to get student loans, I just needed to learn. A degree never seemed important to me. Some of the schools I attended: Newark School of fine and Industrial Arts, The Art Students League of New York,Scool of Visual Arts and Parsons. As impressive as that all might sound I'm really all self taught when it comes to the drawing. I started working for fanzines as a kid and had my first piece printed when I was about 15. I always liked that rush seeing myself in print and decided on a career in the publishing arts early on.

Q. What is your creative background? Have you done other comics? Illustrations?

I've worked far all the major and not so major comic companies at one time or another. As a penciler, inker and colorist. I've also worked as an editorial illustrator, advertising artist, storyboard artist for animation and television among other stuff.

Q. Have you always been a comic book fan? Or did you just one day decide to do your own? What got you into comics?

I always liked comics and shortstories. Any good movie and engrossing story in any medium has always attracted me to adding my two-cents to it. I have always entertained the idea of one day doing my own book, but only recently felt I had the proper story to sink my teeth into. So I always just kept doing other things. I love to draw, so I'm always busy somewhere learning something new. Finally my story just wouldn't go away, and here we are......

Q. Do you have a favorite Title? Character? If you could do any book out there, what would it be?

I would like to work on any book where they would let me tell a story my way and not keep breathing down my back about continuity of storylines across a multitude of titles. That stuff just killed all the fun in comics for me. Maybe Krypto the superdog might be fun(chuckle).

Q. What is the coolest moment you've had so far int he Comic Business? Besides having your own Title at Image!! )

The fact that you want to interview me makes me feel pretty darn cool!

Q. Now, I'm sure the question thats on everyone's mind, Tell us a little about Tooth and Claw! What is the general premise behind the book?

TOOTH AND CLAW are going to be the comic book of the millennium. No kidding. I put a great amount of thought and hardwork into the story and art to make what I think a cool comic is about. I promise you it will be different. Its not inked real slick or is it over colored with excessive computer effects. It is not a cliff hanger/manga book. Its got an adult edge to it,as I'm tired of seeing comics that just insult most fans intelligence by giving them a rehash of a video game. I'm going to try and write an ongoing book with strong characters and somewhat believable settings. Still full of heroes and villains without becoming a satire of it's self. (as I roll up my sleeves and trudge forward!)

Q. Where did you get the ideas for Tooth and Claw? Did something specific inspire you?

My ideas are always running through my head non stop. Sometimes I even get to see some of them when they slow down. I just wanted to get away from all the gear and guns on the heros.Real retro!

Q. Speaking of inspiring, what inspires your creativity?

Everything inspires my creativity. No joke. Just going for a walk with my wife and dog, and I'm thinking about what's coming up around the corner, What kind of monsters and how many of them will be equipped with flying devices!!!YIKES!!

Q. Tell us about the main characters, the hero's and the villains!

TOOTH and CLAW are prehistoric lovers, reincarnated into the bodies of two slain police officers. MORB and AMANO are two very twisted alien siblings who are bent on conquering earth. Theres more to it than that but you'll have to buy all two years of the upcoming series (I hope it lasts that long!)

Q. This interview will be read by many aspiring writer / artists. Do you have any tips or suggestions from your experience in getting published?

My best tip I can give is stay focused. Set small goals that will bring you closer to setting and achieving bigger ones. Have a plan, and be realistic about it. Understand how you have only so many hours in a day and make them count. Listen to your heart, it will always tell you the truth. Take advice with a grain/pound of salt, very few people really know you or what you can achieve once you start. Some even want you to fail as they have no sense of purpose except to hurt and destroy because they have convinced themselves that they are incapable of attaining anything themselves. Gauge your work against the best, shoot high. If you fall short at least you've made it out of the ballpark. Next time across the street, and eventually the stars.

Q. Do you have any other up and coming projects that you can mention?

The only other project I'm considering at this time is hitting the couch for a quick snooze!

Talk to you soon, Mark.

Thank you! It was a pleasure! I'll make sure everyone buys your comics!!
