I watch the knife
quick flash
over the length of orange root.

I am learning the names of things.

Famished. Knife. Sharp. Careful.
Here.
Put this in the trash.

She puts a jewel in my hand.
Pop it goes between baby lips, milk teeth
crunching down, the tongue flooded
with hunger's joyful giggle of relief.

Quick flash
hand meets chubby baby cheek.
What are you, stupid?
Stupid girl!
I SAID PUT IT IN THE TRASH.

Oh.
Spit and it lands
on the immaculate floor.
I soon follow as she
hails words and blows
down on the child
whose name I now know.

Misery
So much misery in today's batch of poems. You pull it off well. I like your conversational style quite a lot, and you have a matter-of-fact tone that's hard to pull off (I keep trying).

Stupid Girl
this is a well-captured slice of domestic misery. It's sad but completely real, relatable, not over-stated or melodramatic.
