WINTER SOLSTICE IN A CHEAP HOTEL

When too many people
are trying to put an arm around your neck
something is wrong.

60 yrs. old -
while shopping
I still like to stroll down the toy aisle.

On a park bench
an old bum sleeps
covered in newspaper
with all the bad news.

A rowboat is like time -
turning your back
it will drift away.

Small poems are like bluegills .
Some of them are keepers
others you throw back.

Love can be like frying eggs -
one lands perfect
the other breaks.

In winter
bums with wire shoelaces -
theives are armed with plier-snips.

Gravity must be variable.
Sometimes when I flop on the bed
I'm heavy as wet snow.
Other times light as a sparrow.

An old woman
weeping on a bus bench
for plenty of reasons.
Maybe not.

Another winter -
time grows thin
like a vagrant in the diner window.

6 a.m. -
not everybody is killing each other
but they're taking aim.

I had a staring contest
with a large rock.
I finished shaving
& left for work.

WINTER SOLSTICE IN A CHEAP HOTEL
Loved these. Observations, reminded me of those "thoughts for the day" quotes that used to be at the bottom of this calander we had. Only these were better. My favourites were the "Love can be like frying eggs" and "Gravity must be variable" lines, but all of them were succinct and thought-provoking. Taken altogether there's a sense of loneliness and maybe regret, but that might just be my early morning brain. Either way, great start to the day, reading this.

Winter Solstice
I LOVED this one. Random, disjointed, kind of like my own thoughts on a morning after a heavy night of drinking, and prior to my third cup of coffee.

Small poems are like bluegills .
Some of them are keepers
others you throw back.

That was by far my favorite. The stanza about gravity being variable also stood out.

Thanks for this, Gomar!!

Guts/Pen/Doll
Thanks for reading and commenting. This is some rough writing I did yesterday, probably shouldn't have posted it. Not sure what to do with it, so your comments are very helpful.

Shouldn't?
Shouldn't have posted it? Fuck that, Gomarsoap. Your "rough writing" is usually better than our most polished work. You should have no time for such modesty.

We all have our favourites here, but mine is definitely:

"Gravity must be variable.
Sometimes when I flop on the bed
I'm heavy as wet snow.
Other times light as a sparrow."

Perhaps due to my profession. That, especially, resonates with me.

I love it. It's like life lessons.

"When too many people
are trying to put an arm around your neck
something is wrong."

"60 yrs. old -

I still like to stroll down the toy aisle."

May be random thoughts classed into poetry, but I like your random thoughts. I love that you had a staring contest with a rock. I've been there, and occassionaly I won-

best to you, Bob-

Anthem
Bob,
YOu have written the anthem of life. There are probably hundreds more observations you could make, but I'm glad you kept it short, to the point, and you had something in mind with it all. It just goes on and on, life, work, birds crapping on my car......

It was almost funny in some verses, but too true to laugh at. I too like you observation about variable gravity. You could start an entirely new course of physics study at all the major colleges; Newton's theory of gravity, Einstein's theory of relativity, Hawking's theory of everything quantum, and Gomar's theory of a nice napping couch...great.

top score on this one.

Solstice comments
Thank you Viper9, MsMaks, JJDoe, Wizard of BWOz, tl, wanda & Gams. Your comments have been a great help in deciding where to go with this. Double-thanks.

Yeah, Legs, I've won a few, too. All you have to do is blow steam on the mirror and run before your face comes back.

stray frames
Stray frames from a stream of consciousness. Excellent, Bob. A country of the mind.
