I was hanging out last week at my favorite little North Bay record store. I drop in maybe three or four times a year. What I love about the place is that they feature a ton of new and used CDs and records, strange magazines and a wide variety of hard to find DVDs. One DVD in particular caught my eye: "Bukowski:Born Into This." It simply has to be the definitive documentary on the life of Charles Bukowski.

"Born Into This" was produced and directed by John Dullaghan. A former advertising copy writer, Dullaghan (with the blessing of Bukowski's widow) spent seven years putting this comprehensive film together. Not only has he brought together a wealth of Bukowski footage from all over the world, but Dullaghan conducted over a hundred interviews with friends, relatives, and other writers and admirers (including Bono, Tom Waits, Sean Penn, Harry Dean Stanton, and many of Bukowski's ex-girlfriends).

Alternating between black and white and color, "Born Into This" is 100% Bukowski at its best: There's Bukowski taking his cloths to the laundry; There's Bukowski reading at City Lights in 1970; There's Bukowski crying over a lost love; There's Bukowski drunk and lashing out at his wife.

For me, some of the most interesting moments of the film feature his publisher, John Martin, reminiscing about how he and Bukowski formed their business partnership.

The DVD is also filled with special features (including an interesting audio commentary by director Dullaghan). No doubt about it: "Bukowski: Born Into This" is a 10!
