Chapter 8

ďHalf day at best.Ē He thinks as the horse slowly canters on. He left the detachment just outside of Ashton. The sergeant has been stymied at this point for leads on the escaped 1242, but it wonít take him long to find someone whose seen a stranger recently and someone else whoís seen that person go into the Rusty Blade. 1242 had been there a half-day ago to retrieve his sword. The warlock was accommodating enough although he did have to defeat the familiar before the old man was forthcoming with any information. The old man had provided some solid information though. For that the knight told him that a detachment would be coming by soon, probably within the day. They would find the passage once they got there, but it would be empty and the warlock long gone.

The knight finds that his thoughts scatter as the horse canters through the small road that connects Ashton to Maragall. Itís not Maragall that he is headed for though. He isnít headed to Maragall because 1242 isnít headed to Maragall. No heís going to where it all ended. Heís headed for the fields of Collan Rue, just South of Maragall.

Collan Rue is a vast plain of tall grasses, small hills and wild animals. Thereís plenty of game and many wild plants that when used correctly can harm or heal. Some thieves made Rue their home for a while, but after what happened there ten years ago has frightened off even the coldest of cutthroats. Those that pass this way do so as quickly as possible and never at night.

This is where he needs to cross. The night air is cool and crisp, but he can feel it ebbing. In an hour or two dawn will be upon them. The sergeant will have done his job thoroughly and will be passing this way. Before reaching Maragall, heíll realize that he needs to march through Collan Rue to be sure that 1242 isnít there. Thatíll be murder on the men and no telling what theyíll do to 1242 if they find him before he does.

The horse is skittish as he makes his way off the road and onto the plain. Dark tall grasses can hide many things. Things thatíll kill a knight, but eat a horse. A gentle pat on the neck soothes the animal, but doesnít lessen the fear it feels. About half way through a rustling movement spooks the animal. The animal bucks and not being prepared the knight is thrown and the horse takes off.

After catching his breath and soothing his head the knight rises and tries to call to the animal. Realizing that this might alert 1242 to his presence he stops and contemplates his next move. Go for the horse and he may lose 1242. Without the horse he may never catch up to 1242. Weighing his options he decided to try and find the lost prisoner. Slowly he moves through the tall grass hoping that his direction is at least straight.

Some Thoughts
I have just have a few thoughts on this chapter. They are:
1)Is this a Science Fiction story?
2)Maybe I ought to read the other chapters.
3)The story line was developed properly.
4)I liked how the characters were presented.
All in all this was a good chapter.
