[Author's Note: I wrote this poem for my brother's recent fourteenth birthday. It is an attempt at explaining the mysteries of little brothers' minds as seen by older sisters (like me)].

Sometimes brothers are like Woodrow Wilson
Promising to keep out, but the draft had to come*

Sometimes brothers are like FDR
Put on the spot but taking it too hard**

Sometimes brothers are like Newt Gingrich
Putting the world around in a stitch***

A brother, however, like Teddy [Roosevelt],
Must keep his army rough and ready^
So his world will remain steady

Brothers should be smart and good
Like President George W. Bush

But whether your brother is more like Reagan
Or Ray Nagin,
Brothers are too good to be forsaken!

*This line alludes to Woodrow Wilson joining the U. S. with the Allied troops in World War I after promising during his Presidential campaign to keep out of the war.

**This line alludes to Franklin Delano Roosevelt's impulsive and discriminatory decision to detain all Japanese-Ameriocans in internment camps after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. FDR assumed that all people of Japanese heritage were either spies or in some other way unfaithful to America.

***Former Republican Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich shut down the U. S. government briefly in 1995-1996 during a budget fight with former Democratic President Bill Clinton.

^Before he became President of the U. S. in 1901, Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt led an army nicknamed the "Rough Riders" in the Charge up San Juan Hill near Santiago, Cuba, during the Spanish-American War.

"Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not."-Jeremiah 33:3, King James Version

"Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path."-Psalm 119:105, New Living Translation

The present and future are not about who you were in the past-rather, they are about who you are and who you will become.

"Writing is truly glorious in that an author can put on paper the words that fear denies the voice to speak."-from my short story, "Set Free"

"...What you feel is what you are;
What you are is beautiful..."
-from "Slide" by the Goo Goo Dolls

Life surprises you! And I'm talking about the good stuff, because a bad surprise is not a surprise at all, it is just shock and horror. All of these good surprises, they are rewards, and the things that happen to remind you that you matter and that you should make yourself faithful so that you can be deserving of all of life's good surprises. Every wonderful surprise in life is a chance to flourish, so grab life by the horns-but don't ride, steer instead: life's horns are life's joystick. You can handle it, because your life's horns are made especially for you. If you don't give up, all of this will hold true and life will continue to surprise you.
