‘Jeeze, Boomers . . . you hear that?’ Yelina and her kitty paused to listen. A faint sound came to their ears, from far below. A rhythmic hissing and clanking, like hammers and hydraulic machinery. The sound was somehow ominous.

A movement from down below caused Yelina to grab her kitty and duck for cover. When nothing came up through the hole, she looked over the rim and peered down.

After several long moments of staring in dumbfounded shock, Yelina realised she hadn’t drawn a single breath. The enormity of what she’d seen made her back up and sit down, holding her kitty tightly to her.

‘What a horrible, awful place! What horrible, nasty creatures!’ She thought a moment. ‘What are we going to do, Boomers? It looks like they’re going to invade us! And this might not be the only place like this!’ She took a deep breath- a long, shuddering sigh. ‘Well, we can’t do anything with just the two of us. Let’s get out of here!’

‘You got him!’ Carly crowed as the last alien machine spiralled to the ground, belching grey smoke.

She and Kiko watched as the grotesque probe, its ruined mechanism whining like a stricken jetliner, plunged to the ground, sending up a gout of moist black earth.

‘Carly, no!’

Heedless, Carly flew down to check upon the downed intruder. ‘Ding-dong, the witch is dead! Nyaa, nyaa, nyaa! Who’s the king of the hill now, wise-guy- HEY!’

Pulled her to the relative safety of a dense thicket, Kiko scolded, ‘You don’t even know if it’s dead for sure, yet! You wanna get fried?’

‘Well, it sure acts like it’s dead,’ Carly replied, miffed. ‘C’mon, let’s go look at it-’

‘No! We’ll just watch it from a distance, first!’

‘From a distance?! I wanna poke it with a stick!’

Kiko responded with a pained look and shook her head. ‘Whatever for?’

Carly shrugged. ‘I dunno. Mainly ‘cause I wanna poke its eyes out for shooting at us.’

Kiko shuddered. ‘You are so morbid! But, okay. Let’s go have a look.’

The two stared in shock as they peered into the clearing where the alien device had crashed.

‘Oh, no! It’s gone!’

------
You are the alien.
