train comes down
‘clickety clack, clickety clack, clickety clack’
sings the tracks.
said a train comes down
to take them away
take them away to earn pay that doesn’t
feed their families.
‘clickety clack, clickety clack, clickety clack’
sings the tracks as I lay
my white soul down for theirs; black!!
said a train comes down
to take them away, away, away…
Johannesburg is too far away
to work for pay that won’t
feed their families.
‘clickety clack, clickety clack, clickety clack’
sings the Soweto gospel choir
‘MANDELLA, MANDELLA, MANDELLA’
sings a nation
freedom fighter youths
roam the street no longer abused
living the day in memory
of those slaughtered at Sharpeville.
‘clickety clack, clickety clack, clickety clack’
sings the sandals of once rebels
cruising the dirt tracks
without passbook to hold
them back…..
finally; an end???

------
to that cool mountain air on an appalachian trail, oooooh life is better there - yonder mountain string band
