Kiko and Carly stared at the growing pile of odds and ends Yelina had piled on her cart as they wandered through the vee-ped parts warehouse.

‘Why don’t you just buy a whole vee-ped?’ Carly asked her, her curiosity growing.

‘I’m not making a vee-ped,’ Yelina told her, cryptically.

‘Then whatareya makin’?’

‘You’ll see.’

‘They’re kinda small for vee-ped parts,’ Kiko put in, frowning. ‘More like for hover-boards. You’re not making hover-boards, are you? I hate those things!’

‘I’m not makin’ hover-boards,’ Yelina muttered distractedly, checking her list and taking a look around. ‘Hmf! I wonder where they keep those J-10 Power Packs?’ She led them in search of a clerk.

‘J-10's?’ the clerk said dubiously, scratching the back of his neck. ‘What on earth do you want three dozen of those for?’

‘We’re makin’ something,’ Yelina told him evasively.

‘Yeah, but that’s a lot of power and a lot of lift in a small package. What are you making?’

‘Oh, a whole bunch of things,’ Yelina lied.

‘Well . . .’ the clerk mulled, thinking that he perhaps shouldn’t sell that many powerful lifter-drivers at one time.

‘We need ‘em for a school project,’ Yelina tried, hoping that would work.

‘Oh, I see,’ the clerk said, trying to feel as though he understood completely. ‘Well, okay then. They’re over there, in aisle 9, right beside the power supplies.’

‘Oh, goody!’ Yelina said. ‘That’s where we’re going next.’

Kiko stared wide-eyed at the armful of powerful but tiny power-supplies Yelina hauled into the basket.

‘Okay, now you are going to tell me what you’re up to.’

‘You wanted a super-suit,’ Yelina said cryptically. ‘An’ now you’re gonna get one.’

‘This stuff is for the super-suits?’ Kiko and Carly exclaimed together, incredulously. ‘What’re you trying to do? Kill us? Do you have any idea how fast those things will go?’

Yelina shrugged. ‘I dunno. Pretty fast, I guess.’

Kiko and Carly exchanged a grey look as Yelina pulled out her credit-card and paid for her booty.

‘Great! Let’s go catch a cab and go home, and start puttin’ this stuff together.’

‘Why do I think I’m going to regret this?’ Kiko muttered as they grabbed their bags and left the parts store.

You are the alien.
