An aging man sits beside the bed of an old woman
Who may wake up and not know him
He holds her hand
Running his other over her grey hair
He speaks to her in his mind
As if she truly hears him
Over and over again
?I love you, I love you, I love you?
Again he has brought his friendly young pup
All he has to keep him company at home
The pup lay by his feet
Stroking his shin with the top of her nose
Waiting to be an icebreaker
In case the woman doesn?t remember
The man closes his eyes and remembers
Her beautiful young face
The wavy brown hair
And, most of all, her smile
Lovely, uplifting
A smile that always made things seem better
Even in the hardest of times
A smile that warmed his heart
And seemed to force a smile onto his own face
He opens his eyes as she rolls over, facing him
He prays to the Lord once more
That she remembers him
She opens her eyes, and they fall on him
There is a moment of silence
The pup wakes up from its brief nap
And fixes its eyes, too, on the woman
Who is now smiling
