Ah! In the upper ether-vaults
of that fair castle shadowy
that is not dream, nor is yet real,
but floats before the bright lights flee,
three sisters solemn did I see.

Three sisters cold as winter frost
and silent as grim destiny,
three sisters older than the world
more ancient than the primal sea,
three sisters, and they saw not me.

and near them were the waters still,
so still that in the ice-clear air
that wisps up from them, one can hear
the whispers-as fleet moments, fair-
that rise up from eternity's lair.

Oh! how I longed to dip my hand
into this pool where time slept fast,
and smother the dread flames that licked
the forests of my thoughts and hopes,
but then I caught one sister's eye.

and in it's dizzying depths I heard
a voice that spoke as does the wind,
"touch not the waters, for they will
inflame the fire that burns in you
until you perish in it's wrath".
