Fourteenth Anniversary

I have been living in a deep dark hole,
pretending to see starlight-
Remembering what it was like in the sun.
I know now it wasn’t right.

It’s strange how we can tend to forget
for all of the want, all the trying-
And we’ll tend to believe we were wrong all along.
Even if we know someone’s lying.

We want to believe, we good-hearted types.
We want to believe that there’s truth.
Though it’s thrust in our face we will hide and not see
that some know only abuse.

And so I’ve been told on this night, once again,
that I only bring everyone misery.
After all, he brought flowers, champaign, and his “love”,
on this, our fourteenth anniversary.

hello elizabeth , this is the first time for me to read a sad work of u...and guess what , I do agree with see the starlight might not be pretending really, it is just that ray of hope reflected from our souls and it shines, though from far away ,but clear enough that we can sense it...that was about only the first stanza , which i felt the most one i dwelled on ...

all the best to u always and may all the happiness in the world finds its way to u all time

PS, thank u for passing by my piece and adding another comment , it truly brings me a smile..thank u

there is definately a lot of insight in this piece , and although it tackles quite a complicated subject you have managed to do it so simply which is great , i loved the last two stanzas , i like the way you mixed innocence and pain. Really nice.

Thank you all for your comments. It was quite a learning period for me. Un til then I presumed that down-deep everyone moved with love in their heart, and sadly, that's not so. But usually i have found it is due to their lack of care to begin with.
Children who are well loved turn out whole, no matter the size of the wallet.
Glad to say, though, he and I never saw anniversary #15 and my daughters and I are so much better off for that!

Thank you all for taking the time to give me your thoughts. Much appreciated.
