The Gold Taxi is the guaranteed ride through anybody's Holy City square: the driver always knows where you need to go, even if you don't, and he knows the Square's traffic rules and patterns better than the local cops do. Provisions are always made for you upon your arrival, and you always arrive with honor clearly due you, even if it isn't acknowledged by those who greet you. The Taxi Driver always knows where he dropped you, and he always knows when to pick you up when it's time for you to leave.
You only have to call the Gold Taxi once. I wouldn't ride any other way.
The people who greet you are another matter. They rarely see the driver or notice the Gold Taxi; if you mention the driver of the Gold Taxi to them, they know of him, but then they'll tell you things about him that you know aren't so, and, just as bad, they'll swear there's no Gold Taxi, even though you just rode up in it. Then they'll make it clear that there's something wrong in you not having a ride of your own, ignoring the fact that there's no point in having a ride of your own if you don't know where to go. After all, they have no ride of their own, despite what they think, and they clearly don't know where to go, or they wouldn't stay where they are.
