Since the birth of our nation
Many men brave and true
Have fought and lost their lives
To build a world for you
Countless honors have been given
Various monuments hav been raised
Parades were held in their honor
It is right that they were praised

But on the ladder of Heroes
Down on the bottom rung
Remain our wounded veterans
They ALSO gave their lives
Yet lived to face the years
In Veteran's homes and wheel chairs
Trying to hide their tears

They didn't come home to speeches
No parades were held that day
They were bundled up on stretchers
And quickly whisked away
They received the Purple Heart
But no medal can ever replace
The wounds that they have suffered
The heartache they must face

There should be a Wall of Heroes
For brave men such as they
Their names should be immortal
And honored every day
Remember these gallant men
And the sacrifice they made
We can NEVER thank them enough
For the terrible price they paid

Good Grief
G. Bea.
Now this just makes me wanna break right down and bawl. It isn't enough that we greet memorial day with a collective yawn, we leave efforts like this one to sit on the lonely posts page? As Charlie Brown would say... but I guess he is as antique as you and me and Memorial Day. I feel so irrelevant.

I followed Sampark's comment here, because I always follow his comments (does that make me a stalker?).

This is an excellent poem, and one written for a good cause: to respect those duped into sacrificing their lives or their quality of life (in the case of many veterans) for the benefit of the wealthy.

I'm appalled by the way veterans are often treated by their governments -- the situation is the same here in Canada as it is in the US. It isn't enough that they've been tricked into killing and being killed/maimed/traumatized, they also have to come home to neglect and dishonour? That ain't right.

Sam is right -- this shouldn't have been on the lonely posts page!

Antiques anyone?
Antique we (I) may be Sam...but remember...we are sought after and highly prized...except of course...when we write Poetry! lol

Thanks for rescuing this "lonely" poem.

Bea, were you lonely?
Well, I just can not believe that. Today I rescued one of Paul's poems there as well. Didn't see you anywhere there....guess my eyes are getting old.......hehe
Bea, I really can't say much more than these 2 handsome gentlemen already have.
This brought tears to my eyes, (so easy to do, I am a soft-heart). Wait I need my kleenex.

Thank you for sharing your wonderful wisdom in such necessary ways.....always bringing our hearts together Bea. Very well written too. You amaze me.

Darlene :) (sniffle)

Wounded Souls

It's a fact of life that nobody honours the brave unless there has been a resounding victory.

I often wonder about the normal people who lost their lives or got injured on the losing side. They too fought for their country and should be held in as high respect as the victors.

Nice to see somebody stand up for everybody...
