"Needles (an ode to rehab doctors)"

no i'm not coming out tonight.
where we're going couldn't be safe. it would never be safe.
we walk the streets
like it's all a dream.
for a moment it is.
i can feel it.
it's under my skin.
and i feel nothing.
the streets lie.
they lie and say
we won't hurt you.
we'd never hurt you.
and people come out of the alley ways
onto the sidewalk
and get on their knees
to scrub away the blood
and pick up the teeth,
lying to themselves
lying to us
saying things will get better,
but still they let us walk.
and things do get better
for a moment in time,
but the dreams turn into temporary tattoos
that get scrubbed away with our blood
