I just watched our president in his news conference refer to 1.7 trillion dollars in U.S. treasury bonds backing Social Security as " a file drawer full of unfunded debt". In his next breath, he stated that those who feared investing their private accounts in the stock market could choose U.S. Treasury bonds, backed by "the full faith and credit of the U.S. government". Can he hear himself? Are you listening?

Amused
I was amused by that press conference.

I was amused that some reporters (not those from Fox, to no one's surprise) were actually asking real questions for once.

And I was amused that Bush took practically ten minutes to answer every question without EVER actually answering any of those questions.

And I was amused at his remarkable facility with banality and doublespeak.

And I was amused that he wants to crack down on nations that don't pay their international debts because the US is the world's biggest debtor nation and has been since the Reagan spend-happy era.

And I was mildly amused by his now-tiresome blather about reforming the UN when the reason the UN doesn't work is that the US never pays its dues, uses it as a puppet, prevents it from doing anything worthwhile with its veto, then blames the UN for what it, the US, has caused.

I was amused, and then I threw up.

one lie

I wanted to focus on one paradox.

Can he truly believe both statements?

I'm not sure which answer scares me more.

Unfunded Debt
Dr. Soos,

I would add that in order to get his private investment scheme off of the ground he would have to either significantly increase taxes or significantly increase the debt...both of which nullify any gains the program has to offer.

So his sales pitch is I'm going to take $10 from your right pocket so that later I can put $6 in your left pocket....and the scary thing is, there are lots of poor people who are saying "Hmmm...that sounds like a good idea."

That's the friggen paradox...how can so many people be so stupid as to fall for this idea...
