[this is a short script I wrote for a short film competition (under 5min in length) so it's rather short. It's still very rough around the edges and I could really use some input. All comments are appreciated very much. Thanks!]
Int Dark cavern - time unknown
Fade in:
A PRISONER kneels facing a bleak rock wall. He wears rags and tattered remnants of clothes; his hands and head are bound so they cannot move. A HARD LIGHT shines from behind creating dancing shadows on the far wall. On this wall a SIGN hangs which reads:
"Motto of the day: we will have a good time; we are freed by the knowledge of our leaders."
In front of the kneeling PRISONER a small POOL OF WATER reflects a perfect image.
The PRISONER sits, gazing into this pool. In it we see the reflection of a well dressed young man. His reflection wears clothes we are very familiar with: A clean t-shirt, jeans, and a hat which he has on backwards.
We hear faint footsteps now but cannot see anyone.
Prisoner
Who's there? Show yourself!
(frightened, confused)
ECHOES.
The prisoner lifts his eyes and scans the room. We hear faint WHISPERS in the dark and FADING FOOTSTEPS.
SLOW MOTION: A SOFT WIND begins to blow, rippling the water of the POOL. As the POOL is disturbed the illusion is momentarily shattered. The PRISONER sees reality for the first time.
Brief images appear in the water. The PRISONER in ragged clothes. A CLOAKED FIGURE. The PRISONER dressed well. Finally the reflection settles on the PRISONER dressed in ragged clothing.
He pulls back in shock and his BINDINGS break. The PRISONER, freed, drops to his hands and knees staring at the image in the POOL.
Light glints on the surface of the water. The PRISONER turns to face the light.
The light is blinding. The PRISONER throws up his hands in a vain attempt to shield his eyes. A black figure stands - a silhouette in the bright light.
PRISONER
Who are you?
(confused, inquisitive)
No response.
The PRISONER turns away from the blinding LIGHT and smites the ground in frustration. He turns, and reluctantly walks back towards the LIGHT shielding his eyes with his HANDS.
The CLOAKED FIGURE is nowhere to be seen.
EXT. barren plain - morning
The PRISONER steps out of the darkness, blinking, and into the full glory of the sun. We can see nothing. The PRISONER drops to his hands and knees clearly in pain.
The light becomes more tolerable. The PRISONER looks up. The PRISONER kneels in a barren plane. To his right a large mountain rises.
The CLOAKED FIGURE, barely visible, stands off at a distance. He motions towards the mountain and beckons. The PRISONER rises and follows.
Montage of the PRISONER ascending the mountain.
The PRISONER reaches a steep rock cliff. He looks back towards the trail he has followed. He hesitates and then slowly begins to scale the rock face.
A wind picks up as he nears the top. Suddenly half visible arms, attached to seemingly nothing, pull him back. The CLOAKED FIGURE extends his HAND to help the PRISONER up.
The PRISONER tries to take his HAND but his hand grasps nothing but air. His faith begins to falter and his arms weaken.
We hear a voice as from the dust begging the PRISONER to try again. With one last effort the PRISONER tries again and this time connects with a solid hand. He is pulled up.
Ext mountain top - evening
A grey mist covers the mountain top. The PRISONER kneels face down for a few seconds as he regains his breath. He looks up but no one is to be seen. The PRISONER looks down at his hand in wonder.
We see the CLOAKED FIGURE quite clearly now. He beckons and then steps through a wall of mist. The PRISONER stand and follows.
We now see a CLOAKED FIGURE standing on a high mountain peak which is no more than 15 feet wide. The PRISONER is no where to be seen.
The CLOAKED FIGURE slowly removes the dark and heavy hood which hides his face. It is the PRISONER.
The prisoner, no longer enslaved, leans heavily upon his staff, and gazes out over the sunset.
FADE TO BLACK.
