Freezer fog veils the accusing glare of itsí icy eyes, a frosty beard encrusts the fishís screaming frozen face.

My friend Paul had stopped by a couple of months back, acting weird and not wanting to have a beer with me. Didnít he put something in the freezer? I remember him pulling a bunch of stuff out first. What did he say? And it wasnít this big anyway. I havenít seen him since, but I heard heís at sea again.

I remember talking with my ex-neighbor Tony back in late summer- it was Labor Day. We hadnít said much but hello until then, I had asked him to come over a couple of times before and he said maybe later but never did. Tony was talking about his boat and deep-sea fishing. A few weeks later I realized I hadnít seen Tony lately, and I still havenít. Just last month some new people finally moved in, but they had no information on the previous occupant.

No, it was Sunday. Labor Day was tomorrow so I wasnít worried about having a few more beers on top of the more than ample quantity I had already consumed. Tony apparently felt the same way, and I have increasingly vague memories of his increasingly wild tales of island-hopping involving such varied contraband as exotic wild animals, high-class call girls, and jewels. When I asked him what he does for a living, he said he was an entrepreneur and started talking about giant squids and killer fish that walk on land and I made some crack about land sharks and I think he got quiet after that, like he realized it was getting pretty deep.

But did he give me a fish? I donít remember! Somewhere between the trained smuggling dolphins swallowing drug-filled condoms and the land sharks I stopped paying attention- and then there was all that beerÖ Maybe there was something to what he said, but I doubt it. Still, Iím going to thaw this ugly sucker, mystery fish recipe or no.

Maybe Tony gave me a stuffed fish.

Deep Blue Freeze, Pt. 2
You build up the suspense very well. Now I'm wondering what he stuck in his freezer. When he opens the door what's he going to find? Is it resistant to being frozen? Are the police or some intelligence agency coming after him because of it?
