The ring glimmers dully between his fingers
"Will you marry me?" he wants to know
I've been pondering this question for months
He wants an answer

To have and to hold
Forever and ever
I like the having, and the holding
But I don't like that everything's my fault
I don't feel like holding when he's yelling
And I don't want to have all the blame
For . . . ever

I now pronounce you man and wife
He's the man; I'm the wife
Wife . . . his wife, belonging to that man
And man, strong, loud MAN
Where is the husband in all this?
Where does it say "woman and husband"?

I present to you Mr. and Mrs. Guy Man
My last name, my family name, gone
Lost to marriage, to the new family
To man
Hello, Mrs. Man
No, let me introduce my husband, Mr. Hername

I admit, I love the man
I love the smile and the gentleness
I desire his strength and his support
And I miss him everytime my spirit wanders afar
I do, I want to marry the man
The one who trembles in expectation of a word
A word to sign away my name

But what about the man who yells
And the one who forgets the words I say
And the one who doesn't believe in my God
Do I have to marry him too?
I want an answer

His expression begins to waver
My time for pondering has past
The question hands between our fingers
. in the form of a ring
I must speak now
And then forever hold my peace

This was a very insightful piece. It takes a strong woman to think of the yelling and placing of blame when shiny baubles are placed in front of her promising undying love. You did a beautiful job writing this, the ending was nothing short of perfection. I'll be looking for more posts by you.

Great read. I could relate to every part of it. I'm sure this will hit a cord with a lot of people.

Keep writing. I'll keep reading.
