Author's Note:
When Lucie Adams saw the Tagalog version of this poem in my announcement, rather than disregarding she took it for translation to her friend Teresita Laurion Bouchard. Lucie later on, with my permission, streamlined it into an "English-friendly" poetry - and here's her version:

A Toothpaste Model's Poem

Woke up
with a taste of cigarettes
in my mouth,
a feeling missing
from my chest.

Barred it last night,
barred it from taking over me,
that I should have screamed
to your face,
January's cold

Smoked my Marlboros all night
and couldn't gargle
so I drooled up
a map for my pillow
the color of chocolate.

Desire your heart:
(to fall for me)
this urgency,
why can't I shake it?

That brusque lover you spoiled
won't love you
yet my attentions
get me nothing in return:
why not?
You have your reasons
for not turning to me.

I can brush my teeth all I want:
it's no use.
I try to forget you,
forget the many hopes
of ever kissing you,
of ever becoming handsome
in your eyes.
Fresh breath doesn't matter anymore.

They all remain clueless
about my bad breath
behind those white teeth
I show on TV.

Tula ng Isang Toothpaste Model
(A Toothpaste Model's Poem)
by Peter Paulino

Gumising akong
may lasa ng sigarilyo
sa aking bibig,
may kulang na damdamin
sa aking dibdib:
GALIT na hinadlangan kong
kumubabaw sa akin kagabi
na dapat sana'y
naihiyaw ko
sa mukha mong
tirahan ng Enerong malamig.

Kulay tsokolate
ang mapa ng laway
sa aking unan
dahil hindi ako
nakapagmumog man lang
matapos sa isang kaha
ng Marlboro sa magdamag.
Bakit `di ko mapagpag
sidhi ng pagnais kong
sa akin puso mo'y malaglag?

(Bakit kasi
hindi ka na lamang
sa akin pumaling,
pinalayaw mong brusko
`di ka naman maibig?
Samantalang ako na naglalambing
`di masuklian ni isang kusing!
Bakit ba hindi?)

Magsipilyo man ako ngayo'y
wala nang silbi
dahil nga nililimot na kita
at mga pag-asang makahalikan ka
isang sandaling pumogi ako
sa iyong mga mata.
Wala na,
wala nang kuwenta pang
magpabango ng hininga.

(Hindi nila alam bad breath pala ako
kahit ang puti-puti
ng ngipin ko sa TV!)

crystal face I kiss
tongue tastes like sweet cold rain
I fall into pond
