Kisses Between Classes – High School Relationships
By James

What is the one special day that couples yearn for more than anything? Sure, the first anniversary is important, but Valentines Day, according to most Bethel High School students, is the one important day you get to show that special someone how much you love them. But what does Valentines Day mean to couples and those who are single?

Single freshman Chrissie states: “We’re here because of love, Valentines Day is the day that we’re supposed to show our love for another person.” While single freshman Matt adds: “Seeing people exchange saliva in the hallways is the absolute low point of my day.”

Sophomore Chloe adds: “I’m getting him a teddy bear.” And of course, everyone has different ideas. “I’m remodeling our soon to be child’s bedroom, taking her out to dinner and buying her favorite peach roses,” says history teacher Mr. T. Expressing your love for your valentine anyway you please will be sure to make them smile, whether it’s through gifts or little surprises, such as chocolate, a teddy bear, or whatever creative idea someone has.

But what really makes someone have sincere feelings of love for another person? Is it the personality that the other may possess, their qualities, or is it that you feel comfortable around that special someone? Comfort is one thing that everyone looks for. Everyone loves having someone to go to with school problems, family problems, or even social problems because they know that the person that they’re talking to cares deeply and sincerely. That’s what makes a key relationship. Comfort and communication is necessary, because without it, there wouldn’t be a successful relationship. Great relationships begin by communication and that’s how they last. Sure, intimate moments are wonderful, but communication is key to the lock of that special and healthy relationship.

The hardest part of a relationship is the break up. I’m sure that we all know that it’s a stressful time, especially if you were attached to the person. The best way to get through it is to talk about it with someone else. What if you’re not open? Then why not write your thoughts down. Let your feelings out and write about it. But most importantly, talk to the person who has either broken up with you or who you are breaking up with.

Now, remember, Valentines Day is supposed to make that special someone happy…So be sure to head out to the stores or just stay at home to create a homemade gift. Either way I’m sure your sweetie will be pleased on the fourteenth.

Article?
This doesn't read like a short story at all; it feels like a school newspaper article. Is that what it is? If so, then I think it's fine, though a bit out of my expertise. If it's a short story, er... there's not much story.

How did this get here?
How is this a "short story"?

Article Article Article
I agree with previous comments. You might have chosen a different category. It wasn't a bad read once I figured out what was going on. I just think the category prepares the reader for what they are going to get and if you betray them, they spend more time focused on that, then what you have written.

fascinating
Besides the obvious, I would say this was a fascinating read. Though you had a great idea, you didn't take it far enough, it was much too terse. It could have been much longer and frankly, I would have rather have heard more of your voice in this story, more of your opinion because this is, after all, an opinions article. I would have also have scrapped the quotes, to me, it really contributed nothing to the story to have what high schoolers think of V-day, even though this is a high school newspaper. You also need to work on your coice of words and sometimes your grammar acts to disrupt the flow. Otherwise, good job.

Thank you all for the comments. I appreciate them.

Don't worry....
James,

Don't worry. I've done the same thing. I thought I had posted a short story that was posted in Poetry. Oops! I also got spanked for it by the readers.

Actually, I have to disagree about the use of the quotes. I loved the different viewpoints. But, I too, would have liked to have heard more from your perspective.

As for grammar etc... It never hurts to improve - I like to think I improve every day. However, the average 14 year old is far behind you - trust me!!!

Keep writing!!

My Perspective
Hey everyone. Thanks again for the comments. Now you CAN read more on my opinion. I couldn't do it for this article because it was to be used as a feature and not an editorial, therefore, i couldn't put a lot of what I wanted to say into the writing.

The other published article is called: Observations of an Outsider: Regarding Love

But...

If you want even MORE on my perspective of things, please be sure to read my short story (which is quite long, I'm afraid): A Story About a Boy

I'm sure that you'll enjoy the other two articles. Everyone else that has read them have enjoyed them.

Happy reading,

-James
