Jesus O Jesus….. you don’t need to please us,
Just because we say your name?
Jesus O Jesus….. tell us the truth now,
Why is it that you came?

Hidden deep within the holly hills of time,
An itinerant was found on a mount,
Talking about some things in life
That seemed to really count.

Then from within churched-pews on the right,
Came word of a different way,
It’s not important how you live your own life,
It only matters what you say.

The “fundies,” they say….. the Bible is theirs,
They call it The Word of God,
Pick out a verse that fits your favorite sin,
Then go out and do whatever you want.

Of course, there’s James, Jerry, and good ole Pat,
Listen to what these guys have to say,
God’s truth wrapped in black and white,
No thinking allowed….. not even a hint of gray!

Jesus O Jesus….. you don’t need to please us,
Just because we say your name?
Jesus O Jesus….. tell us the truth now,
What is the purpose of this game?

Sunday morning, Sunday school,
Hear those church bells ring,
All of them uniformed Christian soldiers,
Well-armed and always ready to sing.

Red, white, and navy blue,
As our youth go marching off to war,
Train our boys to better kill the enemy,
Bloody-gutted bodies scattered from shore to shore.

And what about the Moslems,
Our enemies to The East,
Infidels, let’s bomb the Hell out of um,
Until of they’re all dead-n-deceased!

For once let’s put America first,
Let’s take good care of our own,
Those people over there can take care of themselves,
I ‘m so sick and tired of hearin their moanin!

Jesus O Jesus….. you don’t need to please us,
Just because we say your name?
Jesus O Jesus….. tell us the truth now,
Why is it that you came?

Under the roof and just below the steeple,
Watch all of those white men pray,
The blacks are still on the other side of town,
Where they’ve learned they’d better stay.

The Father, The son, and The Holy Ghost,
And those who we call our wives,
Obey your husbands and do what they say,
And you’ll be happy for the rest of your lives.

Spank your kids when they are bad,
That’s what the Bible says to do,
Beat them until their buts are bright red,
And they’ll learn to love God too.

And what to tell our precious children,
About the birds and the bees,
Take away their condoms and pray a whole lot,
They’ll never become diseased.

Jesus O Jesus….. you don’t need to please us,
Just because we say your name?
Jesus O Jesus….. tell us the truth now,
What are the rules for this game?

Brother Bob’s a real good Christian,
He’s owns a brand new store,
No matter how much money he makes,
He seems to always want some more!

Our coins are printed….. “In God we trust,”
We call it….. The American Dream,
Go out and buy yourself a great big house,
Capitalism….. God’s little money-making scheme!

And what about those darn Jews,
You know God never hears their prayers,
Israel, sweet land of milk and honey,
But Heaven….. Heaven will never be theirs.

Pharisees, O fundamentalists,
Whose sins have been forgivin,
Everybody else in the world is lost,
No matter how well they’ve seemed tuv been livin.

Jesus O Jesus….. you don’t need to please us,
Just because we say your name?
Jesus O Jesus….. tell us the truth now,
How are we supposed to play this game?

Send the criminals to death row,
And place them in a cell,
And when their time comes to die,
Well….. we’ll just send them all straight to Hell!

Then there are the lesbian-gays,
Their feelings are all so wrong,
Read um the scriptures and change the way they think,
That oughta bring um along.

Public schools are in a whole lotta trouble,
Our kids are being taught a pack of lies,
Atheistic teachers all over the place,
Damn…..liberalism’s on the rise!

So be a loyal patriotic American,
And wave your flag on high,
Always remember to vote republican,
And God will surely bless you when you die.

But just one more simple question,
Before we finish this troubled song,
Is it at all possible that the fundamentalists,
Have gottin it all wrong?

Lord let us ask you just one more time,
Why is it that you had to die,
What did you do that was so darn bad,
You never even told a single lie.

So what is it that you really want us to do,
How is it that you want us to live our lives,
When our enemies come to slay us,
Are you sure that you want us to forgive them when our day to die arrives?

Love thy God, and love thy neighbor,
It seems like the right thing to do,
For you and I, everyone in the world,
The only one thing that is true!

Jesus O Jesus, we praise your holy name,
Help us to know what to do.
Jesus O Jesus, we praise your holy name,
Teach us to be more like you.

Teach us,
Dear Lord please do teach us....... teach me,
To never stop wanting to be,
More and more and more like thee.

Dear JESUS...
Mr.Soderstrom, my 1st response was, Oh,WOW, HUHM!
This is by fffaaarrr one of the most compeling
writes I have ever read. I'm awed by your insight, and this is Robin's view. This is impressively written from a literally point, as
well as points, I think ,but, could never have put in to words as you have so incredibly done.
This tragic,as well ,beautiful, and so complete. I could not begin to
expand and make more, this is Grand. Thank You

Jesus O Jesus
OK, Now that you have left me speechless what am I supposed to say? You are one intelligent person. Each word, every stanza makes a stronger statement. Incredible! This needs to be read several times not to miss something.

Good work
I liked the last verse best.

You also have to wonder how infuriated He gets to have his name smeared all over the selfish motives of so many "wrong" causes.

Thanks for posting - good work!

Holy Holly Hill
Doug,

I have been going through your work and enjoying every minute of it. You refered to me as a soul friend (I think) in a previous comment. This is something I have found in a few people who write here at Lit and if you ever have time to go through the comments you will see some of the strangest happening along these lines.

Back to your poetry, you directed me to your poem 'modern poetry'... I am not even going to get involved in this one, I consider anything that doesn't rhyme modern poetry.

And eventually back to this one, the theme carried me, your thoughts are profound and I liked the poem. That established, I feel it needs a lot of work to make it a masterpiece. In places I found the meter to be awkward and this detracts for me when I read.

The longer the piece, the more important it is that you cherish every verse, make it flow and keep the reader enjoying the ride! I am aching to take this and work on it to make it flow through my veins. I have done this before to help other budding poets, but I certainly will not with yours (not for you to see anyway), you are already an accomplished artist. The problem being, as someone once commented, it then becomes an 'ivor' poem and not the authors.

I love this piece, but would dearly love to see it if you attempted to make every verse flow as smoothly as the majority you have written.

'Jesus O Jesus….. you don’t need to please us,
Just because we say your name?
Jesus O Jesus….. tell us the truth now,
Why is it that you came?'

Your repetition of this 'theme' throughout the poem, at appropriate intervals, is what made the poem excellent for me, I love this manouvering in rhyme.

I hope I have not sounded too critical, as the work is good, but I feel that this is a literary site and welcome others views on the technical aspect of my work as well as the content.

'Hidden deep within the holly hills of time,'

I know Holly is associated with Christmas, but didn't know it was grown on the 'green hill far away' thought that was the thorn bush they made the crown with!

Have Fun

Jesus O Jesus You Don't Need To Please Us
Dear ivordavies:

I do appreciate your kind remarks..... except I do disagree with one.... When you said that I am "already an accomplished artist." That is questionable, since it wasn't till the last few months that was able to get my first poem published! Otherwise, I agree with everything you said. And yes, I would be honored for you to work on my poem and see if you could improve the meter, etc. I would love to see what you could do!

Your friend,
Doug

Dear Demeter:

Thank you very much for your appreciation of my piece!

Rewrite, by request
Doug,

As I said I had no intention of rewriting this for publication, but I do occasionally rewrite for my own enjoyment and to get a more personal meaning from the authors work. In fact it has probably desecrated the original as I sacrifice words for meter and rhyme etc.

But here is what I made of it, hope it gives you some insight into the narrow boring mind of an old fasshioned rhyming poet!

Jesus O Jesus….. you don’t need to please us,
Because we honour your name?
Jesus O Jesus….. tell us the truth now,
Why is it that you came?

Hidden deep within the holy hills of time,
An itinerant was found on a mount,
Talking about the things in life
That really seemed to count.

From deep within the 'real' church,
Came words that told 'their way',
Not caring how you live your life,
Only the things that you say!

The 'fundies' all say, the Bible is 'theirs',
They call it 'The Word of God',
Pick out a verse to enfold your sin,
Do your foul deed, in the name of 'Him'.

Of course, there’s James, Jerry, and good ole Pat,
Come listen to what they say,
God’s truth wrapped up in black and white,
To accept with no hint of gray!

Jesus O Jesus….. you don’t need to please us,
Because we honour your name?
Jesus O Jesus….. tell us the truth now,

We’re so sick of hearing them moan!

Because we honour your name?
Jesus O Jesus….. tell us the truth now,

Watch all of those white men pray,
The blacks live in 'their' part of town,
Where they’ve all learned to stay.

The Father, The son, and The Holy Ghost,
And those who we call our wives,
Obey your husbands and do what they say,
To be happy the rest of your lives.

Spank your kids when you think they’re bad,
As the Bible instructs us to do,
Beat them until their ‘buts are red’,
So they’ll learn to love God too!

And what advice should we give our child,
About the birds and bees,
Condoms never should be used,
Prayer will keep off the disease!

Jesus O Jesus….. you don’t need to please us,
Because we honour your name?
Jesus O Jesus….. tell us the truth now,
What are the rules for this game?

For God’s blessing when you die.

This certainly has to be true!

Jesus O Jesus, we honour your name,
Help us to 'know' what to do.
Jesus O Jesus, we honour your name,
Teach us to be just like you.

Teach us dear Lord, please teach all... and me
To never stop wanting to be,
More and more, and even more,
As perfect in life as thee.
