Hunched over, sipping her tea
Small, white, apartheid in Montgomery
Try as she might, lose though she fight
On the mystery of hate she can shed no light
Feeling trapped in a Catch 22
Canít describe the hell they went through
High pressure water hose breaking the skin
Hard rubber truncheon crushing a shin
Scared of intelligence and knowledge
They werenít even allowed to go to college
Depressed, compressed, suppressed, repressed
It was a crime to let one express
Their feelings, thoughts, and opinions
Black living in white dominions
Working hard to keep kids fed
Sit down on that bus and off they are led
To a prison cell to wait for a trial
Canít talk in court, racial profile
Freedom their given, but not equality
Change the rules but not the policy
The heart of man is corrupt to the core
Able to love, but inside a war
Tugging from love to hate and back
The password of love Iím not able to crack
Finally I speak up for whatís right
Peaceful persuasion, no need to fight
Today is no different than before
We discriminate now even more
They drink from the same fountain
And climb the same mountain
But inside our hearts, in the shadows of hate
The love that is king is conquered by fate
The ultimate battle rages inside me
Scared of change, yet want to be free
From this hate that has such a hold on my life
Cut myself lose with this loving knife
The double edged sword that helps me to be
A light that shines for others to see
Jesus loves through me when I canít on my own
Iíll be the first to put down my stone
And love with a love theyíve never known
