The rorty waves lapped the sullen shore line
While abandoned boats swayed gently on an intermittent breeze
Watching as a watermelon sun dipped into the calm ocean
And the insensitive moon awakened from its watery grave

Candlelight figures abandoned the glittering promenade and Ferris wheels
For the cold, enchanting sand below
Where lights from the bars cast eerie shadows that dance like marionettes
And play on weary minds, imaging ghosts and ghouls

Lurking through the reeds small crabs and seaweed
Wrapped like tinsel around the boardwalk
Making children delight at the thought of Christmas
On the frozen beach with their buckets and spades

Chipping futilely at the frost which glistens like diamonds in the moonlight
Inquisitive minds investigating rock pools in the crisp night air
Screaming with delight at each new discovery
Until one becomes frightened and of they scamper like crabs

Hope oozing out of them thick like molasses
As the delicate moon creped across the sky
As the desponded waves continue to erode the shore
Turning through the seasons of their youth
