Dear Universe...
I have railed at your inequity
At the imbalance of justice uncorrected
Become jaded because of things I cannot fix
and you ignore me.
I have cursed your uneven hand
Balked at your blindness to the truth
And I am the one who always said,
Prove nothing to me.
And then you let me hear imploring,
Whispers from the masses;
It could have only been the answer
to my demands.
Imagine that you could hear
all the Whispers, far and near
I'm hungry, but we don't have no food
Someone feed me please, 'cause I've been good
Bring my daddy home safe to me
So he can bounce me on his knee;
Make mama stop crying, let her be glad
To see her hurt makes my heart sad
When me and Johnny had a talk
He told me that he wished to walk;
The little girl with the tattered shawl,
Give her a coat like my one in the hall;
All people oppressed who have no say,
Help them find a better way;
Families broken, not destined to mend
Give whatever peace you can send;
Please let the ones who have the code
Think twice before they let the world explode.
Let Arab and Jew walk hand in hand
Across sands we call the promised land;
Show the righteous they've found just one path
That might shield them from the final wrath.
But let them know there are other ways
To find the bliss of eternity's days.
Give strength to the one who resists the vice
So they need not pay a double price;
Implant a dream in every child who lives
That exceeds the blessings another gives.
Too many whispers, longings all year around,
From every hamlet, and every town.
So, Universe, you are off the hook,
I hear the whispers, where you have to look;
Let everyman look at his own life,
Revere his place on this fragile sphere
so that there is not a question
That his footsteps remain clear.
Each man will do what he must do,
And espouse beliefs held dear,
But we cannot blame the universe
For what we did when we were here.
