He pulled another leg off, then
pulled himself out of the shell,
and threw himself on the rocks,
where he drew his last breath
quietly,
while across the aquarium
Jelly did whatever hermit crabs do.

It was pitiful,
his slimy little crustacean body laid out naked,
not moving, not hiding anymore,
not himself.

And we moved him to the yard,
so we could sleep
without breathing the same air a dead thing doesn't breath anymore,
and covered the tank with a board.
Oblivious little Jelly
spent the night in the taxi, alone.

And today, he was buried with all the honor I could muster,
at 5 a.m.,
in the garden.
And he surely won't be replaced,
but we feel bad.
