MARVEL SPOTLIGHT
Go, Go X-Force!

If you've been reading my Your Man @ Marvel column, you know I've been raving about X-FORCE #116, a title that -- and let me be clear about this -- is intended for mature readers (in age, but perhaps not in personality). I mean, what other book deals with press conferences, theme restaurants, dressing-room blowups, focus groups, hot tubs, media events and protoplasmic sex symbols? But enough of my yackin'. Let's hear from the man who put this circus together, editor Axel Alonso:

"Professor X has a dream: That mutants and humans can coexist in relative harmony. But no matter how often Xavier's X-Men put their butts on the line against the forces of hate and intolerance, they've yet to be truly accepted by humankind. They fight for what might be an unattainable ideal.

"Or do they?

"See, there's an unexamined question in the so-called 'X-Universe': What if there were a team of super-powered mutants who actually did live Professor X's dream? What if these mutants used their special abilities to save the world and were accepted, even adored, by humankind?

"That's the premise of the newly revamped X-FORCE. This new team of super-powered mutants resides in the world we recognize -- a world where a blond and blue-eyed rapper gets top props for his verbal dexterity, and a young man of African-American and Thai heritage routinely tears up the country-club fairway. A world that ain't so, well, black and white.

"Peter Milligan and Mike Allred want to introduce you to a new breed of mutant. One who's self-aware and media savvy. One who's watched enough episodes of Survivor to know that in today's world, fame is the ultimate currency. Clearly, the Anarchist and U-Go Girl have made very different choices in their lives than, say, Wolverine and Gambit -- choices that have gained them entry to the zone called 'Celebrity,' where fame overrides everything.

"Even being a mutant.

"So say 'hello' to the new X-Force -- mutants whose faces grace billboards, sell soda and make the young girls swoon. This new generation has climbed the mountain of Professor X's dream. Question is, can they deal with the view?"
