11 Cav
This haiku is probably for the colonel who said "I love the smell of napalm in the morning." War never ends, it just moves.

Aces over 8s - isn't it one of the 11th Cav decals?

Dead Man Walking
Aces over eights is the poker hand Wild Bill Hickock was holding when he was shot from behind by a bitter, losing poker player. It's since come to be referred to as "the dead man's hand" and is considered ominous.

Rcallaci, your title brought that line from Apocolypse Now to my mind, as well as Teflon's. I like the effect of your haiku (a difficult form to be sure) and the way it can be read through several layer's simultaneously. Evocative and deft -- good stuff.

senryu
this qualifies for a senryu- which (for those who do not know) deals more with human nature than nature. This is a most ominous write- very well done!

napalm memories
Thank you all for your insightful and kind comments on this dark and grim senryu.

As the napalm bombs swept across the jungles the site was beautiful and awesome to behold. Liquid fire lighting up the early morning sky.But the aftermath was horror beyond what any words can convey. The smell of human and animal flesh and death filled up ones nostrils as one took a slow walk in the burnt up jungle. A truly brutal weapon that dealt out a dead mans hand.

I thank you all once again for taking the time to read this little bit of horror

warmest regards,
bob
