For those who don't know, "The Black Album"(1991) is by Metallica. It's their best selling album of all time for that matter! It's also my favorite CD(that I own). Let's review some songs, shall we?:

"Enter Sandman": This is a GOOD song. Number one(literally) on the CD, it slaps the taste out of your mouth then gives it back to you in the end, just so the next song(Sad But True) can slap it back out again! James Hetfield's vocals and guitar coincides perfectly with Lars Ulrich's systematic drum beat. It's an awesome song.

"Sad But True": The first time I heard this song... I thought it shomped. But after hearing it a few times, I recognized the significance of the lyrics.

"Hey
I'm your life
I'm the one who takes you there
Hey
I'm your life
I'm the one who cares
They
They betray
I'm your only true friend now
They
They'll betray
I'm forever there
-C-I'm your dream, make you real
I'm your eyes when you must steal
I'm your pain when you can't feel
Sad but true
I'm your dream, mind astray
I'm your eyes while you're away
I'm your pain while you repay
You know it's sad but true-C-
You
You're my mask
You're my cover, my shelter
You
You're my mask
You're the one who's blamed
Do
Do my work
Do my dirty work, scapegoat
Do
Do my deeds
For you're the one who's shamed
-C-
Hate
I'm your hate
I'm your hate when you want love
Pay
Pay the price
Pay, for nothing's fair
Hey
I'm your life
I'm the one who took you there
Hey
I'm your life
And I now longer care
-C-I'm your dream, make you real
I'm your eyes when you must steal
I'm your pain when you can't feel
Sad but true
I'm your truth, telling lies
I'm your reason, alibies
I'm inside - open your eyes
I'm you-C-
Sad but true"

Long song, I know. BUT, it's a very deep song. That song has gotten me through alot by exposing the truth of people who I thought were my friends.

Next song: "Holier Than Thou." I'm sorry, but I don't like this song much. Just look at the first two lines of the first verse:

"No more!
The crap rolls out your mouth again"

It sounds great, sure. The guitars are awesome as usual. But the overall content of the song sucks. I think they wrote the song just to fill space...

"The Unforgiven"

Great song, indeed. I like it's sister, The Unforgiven II(RELOAD - 1997) better, though. It strikes a better nerve. But back to "The Unforgiven." This song is about breaking away from your own personal hell, I believe. That's how it works for me, rather. It's... somewhat slow. But, you can play it really loud and still be happy.

Number 5 on the CD: "Wherever I May Roam."

:) This is a classic. It starts with the "China chimes" that are caused by a trebelled guitar that's being pulled off with each chord played. It's a song about finding your place in the world. Just look at the chorus:

"But I'll take my time anywhere
Free to speak my mind anywhere
And I'll redefine anywhere
Anywhere I roam
Where I lay my head is home."

Tis is really great song indeed(Feel free to blast it with some woofers and sub woofers - it will make the house shake it's bon bon).

"Don't Tread On Me"

Perhaps my favorite song on the CD - tied with "Nothing Else Matters" and "Of Wolf And Man"(which are coming up). "Don't Tread On Me" seems to sway towards the explanation of war and how it never really ends.

"Liberty of death, what we so proudly hail
Once you provoke her, rattling of her tail
Never begins it, never, but once engaged
Never surrenders, showing the fangs of rage
Don't tread on me
So be it
Threaten no more
To secure peace is to prepare for war
So be it
Settle the score
Touch me again for the words that you will hear evermore
Don't tread on me"

That's not the whole song, mind you, only the beginning. But the whole song leads on with that in mind.

"Through The Never"

OK, I'll try to be nice. Content is great, but the music is so annoying! The same thing over and over and freaking over again! I don't have too much to say about it, except that. Oh well.

Number 8: "Nothing Else Matters."

Let the lyrics say it all!:

"So close no matter how far
Couldn't be much mroe from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
And nothing else matters

Never opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words I don't just say
And nothing else matters

Trust I seek and I find in you
Every day for us something new
Open mind for a different view
And nothing else matters

Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
But I know

So close no matter how far
Couldn't be much more from the ehart
Forever trusting who we are
And nothing else matters

Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
But I know

Never opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words I don't just say

Trust I seek and I find in you
Every day for us something new
Open mind for a different view
And nothing else matters

Never cared for what they say
Never cared for games they play
Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
And I know

So close no matter how far
Couldn't be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
And nothing else matters"

"Of Wolf And Man"

This song is about wolves. Really, Tyrant? Yes, it is. Go figure. It has an awesome display of guitarmanship - and boy it rules. I'd say this is really my favorite out of the rest, but what do I know?

Number 10: "The God That Failed."

Eh... This song is bothersome. It usually gives me a headache, but I also hate how the guitars are played in it...

"My Friend Misery"

Content is GREAT. Guitars are GREAT. Song is GREAT. "My Friend Misery" encompasses everything a teen like myself feels over a course of puberty. We feel like crap, and everyone knows it!

"The Struggle Within"

The final song on the CD, and not a very good one. I don't have too much to say about it... I think it was just a space filler, too.

GET THIS CD! Trust me, It's great. Remember, "The Black Album" by Metallica. It's really called "Metallica." But, the cd and booklet are colored black, so it was nicknamed "The Black Album."

A vision of you walking into the arms of another.... you just walked away.

nicely reviewed ^_^
Nicely reviewed - though the song lyrics did drag it out a little, perhaps try key quotes next time? You can understand the point you're trying to make, just as well - if not better by just the smaller quote, rather than the entire song. It also stays in people's minds much better - which is the whole point of the review, to make it stick in people's mind, so that they a) a go check it out cos they think they'll like it (whatever 'it' may be) or b)deliberately steer clear, for the opposite resons.

I LOVE the Metallica 'Black' album - its the only Metallica i have, so far, but yeah, my favourite songs are also "Nothing Else Matters" and "Of Wolf and Man"

Realistic, pointed and insightful in your opinions and reviwing of this.

Coolies.
I also have "Load" "Reload" and some live album of theirs. I'll eventually review them, too. Thanks for the comment.
