Dawn
Just wondering - is allahu akbar a time reference, like a Muslim prayer prior to dawn? That was my image and I loved the idea of the sound coming in that special time of day. My favourite time, just before sunrise. h.

allahu akbar
Exactly, huni. They are the first words of the pre-dawn call to prayer (as well as the other four daily prayers).

It means 'God is great'.

akbar
the first thing they sing from the minarets is

the Fatiha, the opning verse of Qoran that contains:

La ilaha illallah=
there's no god except one god;
Muhammadun rasulullah=
Mohammed is god's prophet.

more precisely, "allah hu akbar"=god HE is great

that's also the thing to say
when cutting off heads,
when dialing 123
into a cell phone,
stting off a roadside charge,
when hearing a boobytrap go off,
when a suicide bomber explodes.

God is great
We're getting a bit off subject, aren't we, teflon. But anyway:

The first thing the pray caller at the mosque next door to me sings in the morning is Allahu Akbar. Since we are talking about Arabic the spelling of an English transliteration is immaterial.

Although the phrase Allahu akbar IS used by extremists in violent contexts, there is nothing evil about the declaration itself (for what its worth, the exact same phrase is used by millions of Palestinian Christians in their own worship). I hoped that a desert haiku focussing on the wonder and magnitude of creation at rest would provide a good context for the redemption of those two small (but crushingly emotive) words.

I agree
This one stirred the senses well, though into a direction different from the one you've pointed it out to be as the wonder and the magnitude of creation:

desert before dawn{sense of hope in a brusque setting}

aquarius is waning{a glimmer of things Western, New Age}

allahu akbar{a typically stereotypical chant of savagery victorious}

The Sound Of Terror
Unfortunately, allahu akbar has become the chant we associate with savagery from the disillusioned fanatics of Islam. This reminds me of the sound of terror.

my point of view
Dear Sahelsteve,

I like reading your writing, " new job for dembo was great, I viewed also your website, I know you are missioner in west africa, it is great job
but i want to clear for some memebers , believe me the Arabic words Allahu Akbar means God Is Great, it is not a spell nor calling for war, it is only a call for pray. it is common nowadays the idea you have about islam, may be you are right, but it is not true.
also Alfatiha doesnot include the statment of La ilaaha till end, it includes only thanks for god for his mercy upon us, we beleive in him and adore him.
I wish for real understanding.
whose who killes are never muslems, the killer are always unbeliever what ever theri relegion is.
sorry for long comments, but I canot prevent myself from clarifying, I admire your poems you are very good
