She moves her knee sideways,
Rolling the seam of her leg,
Turning the point of her shoe
To a stranger.

She nods to her friend’s conversation;
Safe as the squeak on
An old rocking chair.

The ends of her thoughts,
Falling and rising,
Slip past her knee –
She looks up from the line of her shoe.

The stranger, all eyes, is smiling.

The eyes rule all.
