Within the darkness I lay quietly,
Listening to the sounds of night.
Rumblings of distant vehicles,
Rasping chirps of crickets,
Peeping cants of tree frogs.
Murmurs from our little boy’s room
Creaks from above, the mother-in-law.
I strain and strain for some lingering sound
But there is none of you.

Three weeks passed as I did my tour
On that monstrous pig of a rig.
Knowing I would come home
To a house without you.
Turns me inside out.
Oh I understand the need
For your Uncle lies abed.
But I have missed you so these weeks
I am in love you see.

Regardless of the fact that he lies in need
So very far away,
I am selfish with regard to you.
And crave your loving arms
Your sweet caress and kiss
Gentle upon my brow.
I lay awake listening
With heart as well as ears,
For the faintest whisper
Of you.
