I voted for the abdication of romance
as I prefer your honesty to your flowers
I voted for your friendship over chivalry
when, as equals, we might better talk for hours

Perhaps I begrudge you the love I requested
when your honest ease is proven in your slouch
your tattered socks unhidden, your distracted eyes
averted ‘cross your sprawling fortress on the couch

I knew that passion would give way to constancy
as days consume us with their dutiful minutiae
and shivers turn to simple gratitude, unspoken: our
stories told, we love by presence, not what we say

But if you would be here, then, please, be here
not half-in, half-out, perchance to dream --
I would not mind your hand on mine, your eyes
provoking a little shamelessness in their gleam

I don’t need much proof to know your heart is true
not chocolates or diamonds, no sir, all I need is you

"All the darkness in the world
cannot put out the light
of one candle"

glad I took a break
Hazel~

I'm glad I've been away from the site for a little while, because reading poems like this from talented pens such as yours seem so much more enjoyable when I've been away. As always your unique subject matter. delivery, and talent leave me pretty well speechless.

Thanks again for leaving me mute in admiration.

Bart

P.S. You still game for a Write Off?

Of Course, Bart
Glad to see you back, Bart. Of course I'm game for a write off -- simply the name the time, I think I know the place. ;)

constancy
Great topic! I sometimes weigh the consistency vs. passion question. Seems like more of a continuum where one fades into the other. Thanks for this great read.

Constancy
"We love by presence." What astounding insight. A captivating piece.
