Back on board the White House wagon after the presidentís speech to the graduating class at the Air Force Academy? I know I am. Apparently the war on terrorism is analogous with WWII. Who knew? Although one can make a stretched comparison between radical Islam and Nazism, I donít see the comparison between the Japanese and Terrorism. The Japanese and the Germans were allies yes, but about as tightly knit as the United States and the Russians were. Somehow I believe there would have been a minor conflict between the Japanese doctrine of cultural superiority and the German version. Unless the Japs were going to sprout blonde hair and the Krauts were prepared to squint a lot I donít see how they ever could have come to a compromise.

And the amorphous nature of todayís enemy is completely different than the solid borders of the two nation states we fought in WWII. Although Afghanistan surely housed terrorists and gave them the protection they needed to train new recruits it did not provide the necessary flight training it took to fly two airplanes into the World Trade Center Towers. That knowledge was acquired in the United States. How can we hope to wipe away the grime and sludge that covers the true face of global terrorism if we continue to obscure it with false analogies? We canít bomb Florida or Minnesota because terrorists learned to fly there. And now that the Taliban has been driven into the hills and no longer has a hold on the psyche of the Afghani people what have we done to gain their trust and friendship? We leave a force of only 15,000 troops in their country and use funds that could have gone toward building it up on a new war. (Which was against WMD and is now against terrorism, right?)

I donít see how we can ever hope to garner support from the pan-Arab world if we leap frog from one responsibility to another every time we get an itch. Whether or not you support the war in Iraq I think you must agree that its timing was poor. After a clear and important victory over a regime that without doubt harbored terrorists, in a country as complex as Afghanistan, how can anyone believe that leaving it was a good idea? We have left Afghanistan in the hands of warlords and a weak central government to go off and pursue a flight of fancy in Iraq. And not only have we abandoned a nation we hoped to save, weíve abandoned those troops who have been sent there.

And how do we solve this problem? Iím afraid itís up to one of us to get crackiní on that time machine weíve all heard so much about. The truth is there is no easy answer. Weíve muddied the waters of our mission to such a degree with rhetoric and blatant falsehoods that I donít believe anyone in the administration has any clue what to do either. I picture Rumsfeld, Rice, and Bush II sitting together in the oval office nervously commenting on the wallpaper and hoping someone somewhere has a crow bar big enough to pry our ass out of this. Meanwhile Colin Powellís down the hall in the bathroom looking in the mirror and absently repeating ďWhat the fuck?Ē over and over again until he stops crying.

I certainly donít have an answer for these poor tormented suckers who thought they were smarter than the rest of the world. Nor do I have any pity. When your head gets so big it has to be carted around in a fucking wheelbarrow you deserve to feel every brain rattling bump that comes your way. Iíd wish a whole lot worse on them but unfortunately were all in this wheelbarrow together. I just hope they decide to stop using the fucked map they bought in Texas.
