Hey all...I just wanted to let you know that I won't be around for awhile.
I just recently found out that my dad has prostate cancer.
I live in Saskatchewan CA, but home is Michigan, so I'll be travelling soon to go back home to be with my dad and family during this time.
My dad is actually my step-dad, but to me, he's daddy. He's been there through all the good times and bad. He's helped raise me, teach me, take care of me, and love me. He is 65 years old, healthy in all other respects, and full of life and love. Aside from my husband, he's the most loving and compassionate man I've ever known.
There isn't much I can tell you right now about the cancer, except that my dad will be going in for surgery within the next few weeks. When they operate on him, the first thing they are going to do is take lymph nodes from the surrounding area, and check to see whether the cancer has spread outside of the prostate or not. If it hasn't spread, then they will be removing his prostate. On the other hand, if it has spread, well then I'm not sure exactly what they will do. I guess it all depends on if and how much it has spread...
I am guessing that I'll be gone for roughly a month. I need to be there during his surgery...I need to be there for him, my mom and family, and I need to be there to ease my own mind. My husband will not be able to come with me, as he is undergoing retraining through workman's comp., and they won't let him leave for that long of a period. This is a very stressfull time, and I would appreciate your prayers and warm wishes. This site has not only helped me with my writing skills, but it has also given me a place where I feel I am a part of the community. Many of you, even though I don't really know you personally other than through your posts and comments, I consider friends.
So I ask humbly again, please pray for my dad, and please pray that whatever happens to him, that I will have the strength to accept.
Thank you all, I hope to be back soon and hope even more that it's with good news.

Who ends up being you 'real' father is decided by heaven not by man, who ends up being your child also. Our prayers are with you and your dad, you are both lucky to have each other at times like these.

I just written a comment saying our thoughts are with you and your dad at this dificult time.

I am now afraid that this may be misconstrued. My wife was adopted, we have natural children of our own and two adopted children. I strongly beleive that a guiding hand from above ensures that those who should be together are eventuallly given to each other, even if this is not by natural parentage.

Again may I say, our thoughts and prayers are with you both,

God Bless!
My prayers are with you Reba and also your family. In times like this, we have to rely on our faith in God, to see us through this trial. Remember, "His Hand Is On Your Shoulder, and he will walk this path with you." (I have a poem in the archives under that title that perhaps might bring you some comfort.) In any event, don't jump to conclusions just yet...there have been remarkable strides in this disease and the outcome is becoming more and more favorable. Our prayers are with you.

God Bless,
Grandma Bea

Reba, I know what you are going through, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in September. Thankfully it was caught in time and she is doing well. I will pray this too was caught early and that God's healing hand be with him and bring peace and comfort to you and your family. Prayers are with you. Take good care of yourself. We'll miss you while you are away!

many thanks
Thank you all for your kind words and prayers. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it all. I submitted an announcement to let everybody know that I am back home, and that my dad is in tip-top shape :) Oh, and Ivor, you are right my friend, and I understood what you were saying. Love is thicker than blood and I thank God for giving me the father that I have :)
Thanks again to all of you, our prayers have been answered :)
