Employers need to have a little more respect for employees.

I recently quit my job. I'd had enough of their abuse.
Since most of my career has not required a resume, cover letter and appropriate interview I was unsure what to expect at a recent job interview. Well they had some very interesting questions. Like:
1. If you won the lottery would you come in to work? I said if they needed me to help train someone new, yes.

2. Do you take constructive criticism well? Yes I prefer to do my job right.

3. It takes on average three years to train one of our employees fully do you intend to be here that long? I said I would have to wait and see how things went.

4. What is your idea of the perfect manager? I said someone who tells me what to do and then lets me do it. I would ask if I had questions.

And many more interesting and yet weird questions like that. Well I responded in truth. I guess that wasn't good enough as I didn't get the position. When I called back to see what if anything could have been improved they didn't say much of anything. When I asked if there was any particular reason I didn't get the position they hesitated. I volunteered, was it that someone else was more qualified? They said yes but to reapply if the position came open again.

Blatant lies.

I acknowledged that. It so happened that the same position opened up about two months later. I reapplied but did not even receive an interview this time. I mistakenly told them I was going to school part time.

I guess I should've have lied, told them I'd stay forever, give up my first and only child and do it with a smile on my face.

Not to mention that they don't even have the decency these days to email you to let you know you were not accepted.

In my opinion work is something that each of us has to do to live. Some get lucky and find their dream jobs but a recent survey of the US indicated that nearly 60 percent of American citizens were unhappy at their jobs but stayed anyway.

I guess that's life, but it sucks.

It would be really nice if employers could at least try to be a little more honest. Since they expect it from their employees.

It appears as though the company you were trying to land a job with weren't looking for honesty, or they wouldn't have been pigeon-holing the answers. What is really odd is whether you as an employee could expect their loyalty toward you twenty years from now, or when they take a merger (their equivalent of winning the lottery). In this day and age, when most companies could care less about the welfare of their employees, it is absurd to expect any more from an employee other than the skills they are offering. I hope you get the position you want. Next time, though, if you get another goofy question and answer session, be sure and give them the answers they are looking for: that is, if you want to be in that atmosphere in the first place. Sounds like youth to me!
I have to wonder about your age, Brandy. That's been going on for years and years! And it gets worse as one gets older; heavier; saggier; etc. I'm going to offer you some reasons why they don't do those things.

Interviewing potential employees is costly and time consuming... taking time away from other things that need to be done, without adding follow up data entry for e-mails, letters of thanks for applying, etc. Most places can't afford to be nice! And that's the bottom line.

Another reason they don't is that if they say they liked you but this or that didn't jive during the interview, that would give you a chance to say you'll do it differently and then they are boxed in to having to consider you. They seldom do that.

I write for a living, and I can tell you this: producers and publishers, and most other business people I've ever met are strapped for time! Of literally thousands of written inquiries I've sent out, involving copies of 100's of pages of scripts, each, I can count the responses I've had in one minute of my time! These people don't even bother... even if you send them a self addressed stamped envelope to do it with, so it doesn't cost them anything!

But there's also another reason. People who are talkative on an interview, and discuss things that are too personal while there, will always do the same thing on the job, something no employer wants to have around, wasting their employees time. If it takes one to talk, it takes at least one other employee's time to listen.

I can tell what a person's work habits are by just glancing in their car. And I'm seldom wrong when interviewing someone. The words someone uses says a lot about who they are. I even had one potential employer invite himself to my house on the spare of the minute to see how I kept my home! I got the job, not because I was any better qualified than any one else, but because I sorted my knives, forks and spoons in the drawer. To him, that indicated organization and attention to detail. And that's what he wanted more than the rest of my qualifications.

I wish it was youth
If I had youth on my side I could chalk it up to experience and carry on. No, it's just that I have not had to do the interview thing much. Most of my so called career has been in an outdoor field where you called them up on the telephone, showed up with resume in hand and they asked you if you could do the job, you responded yes and they sent you out to the middle of nowhere with a rodman and your bags and didn't see you for two months until the project was finished.

So the "interview" process is new to me who is now trying to get into indoor work. Where there is a certain degree of professionalism no matter what the field.

Thanks for your feedback though. I believe that mister E is probably pretty correct, I should only be a** kissing if I want to work with people like that. And frankly I don't. I am very organized, efficient and hate to procrastinate as I see that things should be done in a timely manner otherwise it screws up all the other plans that follow. I learned that in my outdoor job having to organize crews, be liaison, with numerous maps, sets of plans and paperwork all in the backseat of my truck. If one is not organized in such a tiny office environment as a pickup truck then one can't find that data while on the phone with the person who needs it. And that's embarassing. Thanks for all your thoughts.
