As I said in a previous post, Comments would be moving from "free for all" to "requires validation". Comments now require a staff member to validate them. This will reduce duplicate comments and comments that are out of line. This system is still in beta testing so if you notice any bugs send them to me: crowe@lit.org

We will work hard to validate comments quickly. It only takes a couple of quick clicks to validate them and We check all day long. Overnight comments may queue up 'till someone checks them first thing in the morning.

This will only be on a short period for testing (on and off over the wekend) and then used only as necessary. We don't want to have to use this, but now we have it in case we need it.

Specific Guidelines
This may sound a bit silly, Crowe, but I mean it with all sincerity.

Might you consider writing out what specifically is going to be considered off topic?

The reason I ask is because in one of your last posts you mentioned deleting 30 of your own comments. Since I assume you weren't flaming anyone in those comments, I'm led to believe you're really looking for comments to stay on topic about the writing itself and not, for instance, reactions to the subject matter or related personal experiences (which I know I've been guilty of posting in the past)

I'm curious to know how strict you plan to be about this?

For instance, if I submit a comment about how I loved a piece and how it reminded me of blah-blah-blah, will it get posted or no? If I'm curious as to why a given work differs from the authors normal tone will my question get approval?

At first I thought a lot of the worry about comments was aimed more at creating a flame-retardant space for writers. Since the new comment rules seem to go beyond this can you give me a few hints as to what will and will not make the grade?

And When?
Since my comment just got posted as usual, I'm wondering when comment approval is supposed to go into effect. Or did I read your announcement wrong, and it's just a backup plan until and when needed?

blip
I noticed a period of time last night where comments weren't being posted. I was wondering if you were installing the system then. Apparently not. The delay of posting comments to when they appear isn't one I'd like to see. I understand the need to do so, but hope it won't come to this.

re: comments on lockdown
Comments are again enabled in real time. The system we built is indeed "just in case" and we tested it on and off this weekend and will probably test it a couple of more times over the weekend.

We don't want to have to use it either, but now we have the tool *just in case* we do need it.

haze, indeed I do need to make clear what comments are okay and what aren't. We certainly aren't going to go balistic and start deleting everything ;) We've just had too many people abusing the comments lately and more complaints this year than the last 5 combined. The problem is simply one of volume. With so many people the ratio of signal vs. noise goes up accordingly. So we evolve to try to keep things in line. I will draft a comment guideline very soon to post.

The basic rule I use is if the comments relate to the piece and doesn't violate our other guidelines (like excessive profanity, personal attacks etc.)

It's a hard to figure out where to draw the line and we'll do our best to make sure everyone know where we think the line is. And if you think the line is in the wrong place just say so and we'll likely adjust it. You've probably been around here long enough now to know we don't try to rule this place.. we are more like caretakers just trying to keep everything neat and clean ;)

Removal
I've tried to delete "Naomi" from the website. Perhaps you could help me? I've notice a few words which I must take out.

If Naomi is one of your pieces, you can unpublish, edit and republish. It is not a problem. If Naomi is a comment, then Crowe will have to help you. But any work by you, can always be unpublished through the control panel, "manage writings", the unpublish by clicking the "x" and editing, then republishing.

Hope this helps...
