I walk alone in the darkness
through blackness thick and heavy
and I can hear the footsteps
behind me strong and steady

I can feel the breathing
of it's breath putrid and hot
warming the back of my neck
it's closer than I thought

I try walking faster
my legs are thick with lead
trying to flee the inevitable
my heart is filled with dread

I cannot seem to escape
the beast without a face
I am stuck in quicksand
Running furiously in place

Is it still behind me?
This thing without a name
I care not to meet it's acquaintance
I know not whence it came

When will the morning wake me?
My eyelids are closed and sealed
My heart beats like a racehorse
My nightmare is revealed

------
All that we see or seem, is but a dream within a dream....
Edgar Allen Poe
