At one time I had enough rejection slips to wallpaper my closet.
Now I keep the best ones in a 3" binder.
My favorite of all still is from Twilight Zone Magazine.
It was regarding the story I've published here called BEASTLY OBSESSION.\
Dear Mr. Kotsybar,
When we first turned to this story we thought: "Good Lord! Whatever possessed
him to attempt such a thing." But as we read on we found that it was clever and
interesting -- an experiment that worked well.
All good luck with it elsewhere.

I think I submitted something to this magazine, too, and was rejected, also.

"best ones"? You mean the nicest, most constructively critical...?

I suppose I thought it was the best because it was honest, complimentary and had a surprise ending. It was personally typed and actually signed by hand (though "the Editors" isn't exactly what I would call personally signed). I knew someone at the magazine had actually taken the time to read the story and consider its publication.
The worst rejections in the same field are from Isaac Asimov's magazine. I think the editor (nameless here) hates reading submissions and tries to be as insulting as a generalized form letter will allow. The slant there is to find the flaw that gives reason for rejecting the story as quickly as possible. (ie: didn't space it according to our guidelines, omitted correct punctuation here, found a typo)
