Art.

How the hell do you judge it? With a critical mind? With an emotional mind? Do you judge it?

Nope. We just give opinions.

I think the fundemental element of being an artist is knowing when to care about opinions and when not to care. An artist who is too sensitive to other's opinions quickly finds himself losing touch with his art. However one who never listens to other's thoughts becomes brutish and loses his ability to entertain.

Anyway, that's my two cents...

Yeah, so being the wanna-be artist/writer that I am, these kinds of questions interest me.

Art isn't sacrosanct and certainly is not good because other second-rate artists, critics, or the public buys it. I've always thought Jackson Pollack was a hack, a con-artist, and that abstract art is, by and large, a refuge for uninspired, talentless blowhards. How I view Pollack and his ilk is undoubtedly how others perceive my favorite artist, H.R. Giger and that style of art. I am not suprised by that. Differing viewpoints don't bother me; lack of judgment, an unwillingness to be critical of something on the basis that it might hurt a few feelings, or that it's completely subjective and therefore immune to criticism, that type of thinking does bother me.

Competition drives quality.

The quote below adequately sums up my feelings about art.

"Art is a concretization of metaphysics. Art brings man's concepts to the perceptual level of his consciousness and allows him to grasp them directly, as if they were percepts.

Art is a selective re-creation of reality according to an artist's metaphysical value-judgements.

Guided by his own metaphysical value-judgements (explicit or otherwise), an artist selects, out of the bewildering chaos of human experience, those aspects he regards as indicative of the nature of the universe. Then he embodies them in a sensory-perceptual concrete such as a statue, a painting, or a story. The result is a universe in microcosm. To be exact, the result is a view of the universe in the form of a deliberately slanted concrete, one shorn of all irrelevancies and thus broadcasting unmistakeably to the viewer or reader: "This is what counts in life -- as I, the artist, see life."

I can only respect art that gives you a window, and a wonderful world outside that window, and asks you to be a part of that experience. Something the Pollacks of the world can't do for me.

Like DieD, crafty wordsmith that he is, i beleive we aspire for more than fame and fortune. You will sacrifice anything for art. Money, convention, love, all must be incorporated or swept aside without regret. Not for acclaim or riches, you take those too if they come, but you are driven by a force to become
something better and capture it.

I don't get modern abstract art.
Therapy art i call it. Give me a Pre-raphealite or more lately the fantasy artists, Boris and Frazzetta, story-tellers.

I read the work here and sometimes I just don't get it either. But I figure at the other end is an artist chipping and carving, wrestling with an essence.

Someone, probably very famous said it "let art judge you"?

well that's my 2 cents which on the exchange rate is probably about 1/3 of a bit of a cent

Two ways
Your second and third sections caught my eye. As someone who's been judged in art competitions, I know that the people who call themselves, um, judges do look at things critically and emotionally. "Emotional Impact?" "Skill?" "Adherence to rules (I know that doesn't apply to what you were talking about, but just throwing that in there)?" But yeah, while they do that under the pretense of fair judging, it is still only their opinions. And it's funny. I look at the results when it's all said and done, and wonder why mine was considered better or worse.

However, when I walk into an art museum and see a series of paintings called "White on White" (different types of white paint blobs on white canvas), I wonder what illicit drugs the curator took that morning. To me, that sort of abstract crap will never be art.

AS AN ARTIST, (AM I ALOUD TO CALL MYSELF THAT?), HAVING LOST AND WON COMPETITIONS, HAVING PAINSTAKINGLY BRUISED MY OWN EGO WITH LOW-ESTEEMED CRITICISMS AND JUST DECIDED TO "GET ON WITH IT" AND NOT WORRY TO MUCH ABOUT WHAT OTHER PEOPLE THINK ABOUT IT...I THINK IT'S FAIR TO SAY THAT ART IS WHATEVER YOU THINK IT IS...I MEAN SOME SICKO'S THINK WAR IS ART, PAIN IS ART, ETC. TO BE DRAGGED INTO THE WHOLE "WHAT IS ART?" DEBATE IS PROBABLY THE EASIEST WAY TO LET PEOPLE KNOW THAT YOU REALLY DON'T HAVE A CLUE WHAT ART IS...IF INDEED IT IS ANYTHING OTHER THAN A WORD WE USE TO DESCRIBE AN ACTION, OR THE EFFECTS OF CERTAIN ACTIONS. MAYBE I'M JUST BUTTING IN WHERE I DON'T BELONG! OR TALKING ABSOLUTE CRAP BUT MY MESSAGE IS "ART:JUST DO IT"

Art
Art is something different to everyone that views it or creates it. For me it is too hard to judge someone elses art when you don't know what it is about, where it came from, or what was on the artists mind when it was created. There are some works that make me ooooh and ahhhh because of the colors or the detail and other pieces that I simply don't get. I'm sure glad that there is a way for us to express ourselves despite the judgements on our work. My life is happier now that I have art in it.
