It was twelve o seven, the lunch rush, as the streets of downtown Chicago flooded with busy workers seeking a light meal. Loretta stood on the corner looking up and down the streets for her husband Marlon who was running a few minutes late. She spotted him down the block carrying his usual loud red umbrella she often made fun of. He called that umbrella his good luck charm. There were many times Loretta purchased new ones for him and presented them as loving gifts but he would accept them with gratitude before secretly tucking them away with the others. Loretta waived her hand back and forth so that he would spot her. Besides her beauty Loretta was a simple woman that did as much as she could to divert attention away from herself. Marlon spotted her and smiled. His smile was gorgeous. It was the very tool that lured Loretta in seventeen years ago. They were young high school sweethearts. His smile melted her like a Hershey in the sun. His teeth were perfectly straight and pearly white, but the trophy was his sexy deep dimples.
Loretta smiled as Marlon crossed the street and greeted her by picking her up and swinging her around in his arms like a soldier in reuniting with his Cinderella after many years at war. He gently planted her on the ground and moved in kissing her passionately. Loretta and Marlon kissed as a mist of rain grazed their faces. Loretta forgot about her public surroundings as her heart was full of love and joy. The two stopped kissing and looked into one another’s eyes passionately.
“Happy anniversary baby” Loretta said softly and passionately.
“My happiness does not come from a date but from a lifetime with the woman of my dreams; ditto sweetheart!” Marlon said with enthusiasm.
“I have something for you it’s not much but I picked it with my heart.”
Marlon smiled anticipating Loretta’s gift. Marlon didn’t care what she got him all he wanted was for Loretta to be happy so he determined that he would be happy with any gift as long as he could be with her the rest of his life. “Well let’s see what you have there” he demanded excitedly.
Loretta passed a gift over to him that was wrapped in a fancy bag with a bow. Marlon smiled as he could tell by the outline of the bag it was another umbrella. “You’re too much, you know that?” His eyes smiled along with his lips.
“Go ahead and open it! I think you will like this! I wanna see you’re facial expression before I go back to work!” Loretta giggled like a high school girl as she waited impatiently for Marlon to open the bag.
Marlon opened the bag to find an umbrella, but not just any umbrella a new red one. He looked at Loretta and smiled. This woman really loves her man! He thought to himself as he grabbed her and gave her another long passionate kiss. “I have a beautiful evening planned for the two of us. Afterwards I plan on us having each other for dessert!” Marlon said tickling Loretta on her side.
“I can’t wait!” Loretta looked at her watch “Oh dear I better get back! I will meet you at the rail at five-thirty?” She asked.
Marlon nodded in agreement then pulled her in and started kissing her all over her lips and cheeks. Loretta giggled as she pulled away and rushed out into traffic. A car sat at the light and Loretta found herself going behind it since her job was right across the street. Marlon watched as he noticed the car coming up was not slowing down and the light was changing to green. Loretta turned and blew him a kiss but before she could get the kiss out Marlon was in front of her pushing her out of the way. Loretta fell to the ground without seeing what happened she heard a loud crash. Screams rang out into the streets and a crowd gathered. Loretta looked up and saw the car that was sitting at the light was thrown across the intersection. The other car flipped over onto the sidewalk across the way. Her husband’s body laid split in half in two different parts of the street. Loretta stood horrified. Her screams rang out but were never heard as the devastation of the crowd drowned her out. The only thing that was salvaged was the new red umbrella lying on the sidewalk untouched that she brought him as an anniversary gift.
