Good evening members:

Tonight, several allegations of plagiarism were made against one of our members. Links were submitted to my private mailbox so that I may investigate the allegations. Starting tomorrow morning, I will begin my investigation, and until I finish my investigation, the accused member's account has been frozen. I am also notifying this member of my actions and investigation.

At litdotorg, we take allegations of plagiarism very seriously. It is a horrible offense to claim another writer's work as your own.

If the accusations are founded, I will flag all the plagiarized submissions as plagiarism for the members to view. This might be an educational experience for everyone. It will also serve to embarass the guilty party for his/her crimes.

Litdotorg does not condone plagiarism. I want to make that very clear. And all accusations of plagiarism will be taken very seriously.

Thank you:
Ochani Lele

Final Followup
In case anyone missed the examples that I did post -- the plagiarist of whom I spoke was Ariana. Some of you know her by the name "Mirror" on other writing sites, such as writingforums.com.

I have gone through many of her poems here, and found the links to the original poems by the original authors, some as many as 6 years previous to her version.

In many cases, her versions were word-for-word liftings.

Ariana's account has been locked up, and unless she has multiples on litdotorg, she won't be posting here anymore.

She's also been locked out and banned from many other writing forums on the net.

Ariana -- shame on you.

My apologies to everyone else.

This is NOT the FIRST TIME here on Lit.Org...
Stuart, it was Bobby 7L who claimed to have invited Ariana here, and she seemed so real--not like the old banned plagiarist named WANDA that RCallaci banned a couple of years back from ever returning to the Lit.Org. Wanda was so obvious. I always felt she was a phony...but Ariana seemed just so good, obviously TOO good to be true.

Maybe she is a refined version of the old Wanda and a few others here back during Chrispian & RCallaci days that liked to play this plagiarism game, eh? Or maybe not?...maybe he/she is just a pathethic lonely being who lives in their own fantasy world of sociopathic glory at the expense of hurting others without conscious or shame about stealing their original works.

So sad to see this happen again...

Tashi Delek to you Stuart and the others who figured this out-- oh my, oh my! "The games people play...every night and every day...never meaning what they say, never saying what they mean"....uh-huh~ just like those verses from that old seventies song: "The Games People Play" (or so I think that is the title, not sure, whatever, you all get the drift I am sure)...

Ariana came on here when RCallaci was administrator and Bobby7L was her huge fan...I seriously doubt either of them had a clue that Ariana was not what she seemed to be.

Ah...the internet...amazing what people can do and almost get away with sometimes. Role playing and method writing is one thing, but plageriasm is outright WRONG--though some people in the past actually argued for Wanda that her sin of plageriasm was OK, can you believe it? I doubt the publishing world sees any gray areas in the ethics of plageriasm. It amazes me how amoral some people can be in their quest to "be fair"-HA!

Well...now, I am quite relieved, for I do not miss Ariana anymore, whomever she is, she/he is, needs help for perhaps they suffer from a personality disorder and are untreatable, such is the way of the psychopathic and pathological liars of this world who don't know where the line is drawn between creative art forms, etc., and outright criminal behaviors.

Argggh! Good for you Stuart for dealing with this. I support you all the way.

@ Lena
There is no grey area in the publishing world when it comes to plagiarism. There is no grey area in the academic world when it comes to plagiarism. There will be no grey area on litdotorg when it comes to plagiarism.

Fortunately, most plagiarism is unintentional, such as when an author cites another in his or her work forgetting to use a proper footnotes. And in those cases, the plagiarism is forgiveable as long as corrections are made.

This, however, was a deliberate passing of another's work for one's own work. There is nothing to forgive. It was an evil, criminal act.

Search engines are wonderful things. The easiest way to check any piece on lit is to run a unique phrase through google. It isn't perfect, but it works more frequently than not.

If Ariana is reading this (her last login to litdotorg was May 15, 2009), then I invite her to email me privately to discuss any concerns she might have. When I get to my desktop in the morning, I'll be banning her ISP from this site.

re: Thievery
Yikes.

Good on you for taking care of things, Ochani. And good on the interwebs, for making it possible.

Just for the record, Jonathan Titchenal and John Pickman are both me, so I promise I'm not stealing from anyone.

Re: Plagiarism
I bet that babe-a-licious picture of Ariana wasn't really her/him either.

Full disclosure: my avatar is NOT an actual picture of me. It is, in fact, a lovingly-Lady Clairol-Photoshopped version of the comic strip heroine Agnes created and wonderfully written by Tony Cochran. (Ochani Lele: Please advise if continued use of the avatar is a problem!) Actual photos of the actual LinnieRed are accessible via the MySpace page linked in my profile...though I don't necessarily recommend looking at them...hence the cartoon avatar...

Ariana's avatar
Hi Linnie:

The avatar is not Arian's picture. On another writing forum, she uses another picture of this face. Quoting from one of the other writing website owners who wrote to me last night, "Mirror’s face belongs to an Albanian born writer and photography named Ornela Vorpsi who writes in Italian and lives in Paris. Apparently she’s quite a well known artist."

He continues, "Apparently a few poems that are still on lit.org under Ariana belong to Vorpsi so I'd thought you be interested."

I'm not sure if the owner wants himself or the website identified, so we'll leave him anonymous on these pages; however, I am going to print out Ariana's works on litdotorg, and over the coming days I will identify those which belong to Vorpsi.

It's the least I can do for that poet. I feel so bad that her work was plagiarized by this member.

Ochani

PS: Your avatar is fine! I figured you were in living color, and not crayola!

@ Beckett
Thanks for the head's up! But if you can't plagiarize from yourself, who CAN you plagiarize from?

Of "Ariana/mirror"..
Stuart,
I have links to Ornela Vorpsi's work at my Facebook page.

She speaks Italian..lives in France..born in 1968.

I was a "fan" of the work. I still am. I give credit where it's due..The "red" collection of photos offered by "mirror", at Literarymary.com, are Vorpsi's, as are the photos offered as being of Ariana.

It's deplorable to steal an identity, offering a misrepresented persona.

Ciao,
Robert William

Plagiarism..
Stuart,
There has been a lot of trail-trekking over the past several weeks, behind the scenes, at both Mary and tearoomartists, regarding this persona. Saturday afternoon, Heidi (Geisha), at tearoomartists.com, emailed me with Ms Vorpsi's name. I followed the trail from there. By the way, tearoomartists.com is a by-invitation-only site, with staff screening before membership is ok'd. That may be a method to consider here, as well.

If not on Facebook, Google: Ornela Vorpsi/nothing obvious..Then go to "new works"..The "red collection" of photographs can be viewed there.

Let's hope we can soon get back to the reason for being here.. offering bits of ourselves and experiencing the offerings of other writers, in a spirit of fraternity.

Respectfully,
Robert William

Hi Robert
After speaking with a few people involved, I have decided to delete all of Ariana's-Mirror's works from our server.

Or, should I say, the works of other authors that she stole.

It's back to writing as usual! Keep that pen moving!

...
Well. That sucks. I confess to not having read much of her stuff as I need to be in certain moods to read poetry and appreciate it. I do appreciate your efforts Ochani to the maintenance of integrity here, and also the effort you put into this site. I didn't think anyone could beat Cris in his dedication to honing the craft. So the greatest of me bows in respect and admiration to the greatest of you.
Namaste

PS- I say bury thieves under the library. It might do them some good.
