Pondering a sudden defeat
Under the relentless sun
Baking my body
Like a giant furnace
I relinquished my sword
Bearing the wailing of the wounded
In bitter surrender.
In an unwritten scene,
In an unwritten epic,
Two falcons hovered in circles
Screeching calls of doom
Piercing the depths
Of my soul's sobriety
Yearning for eternal childhood.
Four horsemen in black,
Silent messengers
Stood around me
As the falcons attacked each other
In a bloody act of folly
Like greedy crows
Feasting on carrion.
With tears in my eyes
I looked around
To see what I could find
Of the land I fought for
The land I no longer remember.
And all I saw
Was an emaciated cow
And a dead horse
In a blood-red river.
